What's New in Google Earth?

Vancouver 2010
Hopefully you've been enjoying the 2010 Games in Vancouver! Google has made it easy to follow all the action with a special website to view medal counts, schedules, and each venue in 3D, using the Google Earth plugin for your browser. Explore the twists and turns of the bobsled track, or check out the view from the top of the chairlift at Whistler. All of these venues in Vancouver and Whistler are also viewable in the '3D Buildings' layer in Google Earth. Take a tour here.

New and Updated Imagery
New and updated imagery was added to Google Earth in February, including historical imagery from World War II. You can now see images taken in 1943 of more than 35 European cities and towns, in addition to images of Warsaw, Poland taken in 1935 and 1945. Use the View -> Historical Imagery option to see imagery choices through the time slider. More Cities in 3D
You can fly to and experience the architecture of two more cities in 3D: Vienna, Austria and Madrid, Spain. You can also make your own 3D buildings and have them visible in Google Earth. Google Building Maker makes it easy to build 3D buildings online, and there are now more cities available for you to model: Melbourne, Berlin, Amsterdam, Stuttgart, Lisbon, Sevilla, Cincinnati, Jacksonville, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Raleigh, Memphis, and Houston. 3D brings Google Earth to life!

New Ocean Showcase
Our new Ocean Showcase lets you explore the deep seas without getting wet, using the Google Earth plugin. These interactive tours take you on a journey through the Explore the Ocean layer in Google Earth, as well as some of the most popular dive spots, surf spots, and shipwrecks around the world. You can also tour underwater terrain, research discoveries, and the Great Lakes. Read more and take the plunge today!

Liquid Galaxy
Some of our engineers have spent their 20% time building the Liquid Galaxy, an eight-monitor immersive chamber. It's a stunning way to visualize Google Earth, and we demonstrated it to attendees at the COP15 climate convention in Copenhagen, the American Geological Union convention in San Francisco, and the TED conference in Long Beach. It's still under development, so stay tuned for future announcements! Watch a demo.

More Google Earth Heroes
We first shared the Google Earth Heroes project with you in November, and we've since added two more stories from very different organizations that both use Google Earth to make a big difference. Shelter Associates in India maps slums to advocate for equitable resource allocation and improve slumdwellers' lives, and the U.S. Forest Service saves properties and lives by visualizing and anticipating the spread of wildfires.

Special Report - Haiti Earthquake
January 12, 2010 is a date every Haitian citizen will remember. On that fateful day, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0, struck near the capital city, Port-au-Prince. This month, Google Earth Outreach examines the geographical resources made available to support the relief efforts and communicate the scale of destruction caused by this disaster. Please read more.

This location is located somewhere in the world's second largest country.
