Abstract

Shaped waterproofing membranes having three-dimensional contours are useful for the "reverse tanking" waterproofing of detail areas such as those presented by "tiebacks," pipes, pile caps, and other irregularities that occur on concrete formworks and other civil construction or building surfaces. A
preferred method for making such membranes is to thermoform a membrane laminate, having a carrier support sheet, waterproofing adhesive, and optionally a protective coating layer, as a single unit.

Claims (23)

1. ~A method for waterproofing building or civil construction surfaces having irregularities, comprising:
providing at least one sheet-form waterproofing membrane having a carrier support sheet with first and second opposed major faces, and, disposed over a first major face thereof, a preformed pressure-sensitive waterproofing adhesive layer operative to bond with fresh concrete cast against said first major face and allowed to harden; and providing at least one shaped waterproofing membrane having a carrier support sheet having first and second opposed major faces, and, disposed over a first major face thereof, a pressure-sensitive waterproofing adhesive layer operative to bond with fresh concrete cast against said first major face and allowed to harden, said shaped membrane carrier support sheet having a three-dimensional contour surrounded by a flat collar portion operative to overlap and form seams with said at least one sheet-form waterproofing membrane.
2. ~The method of claim 1 wherein said waterproofing adhesive layers of both said sheet-form and shaped waterproofing membranes each have a protective coating layer over said pressure-sensitive.
3. ~The method of claim 2 wherein said three-dimensional contour has a dome shape, conical shape, cylinder, or pyramidal shape that protrudes on a first major face of said shaped waterproofing membrane.
4. ~The method of claim 3 comprising providing a three-dimensional supporting structure against a concrete formwork over a detail area thereupon, and positioning said at least one shaped waterproofing membrane over said supporting structure.
5. ~The method of claim 4 wherein said three-dimensional contour of said shaped waterproofing membrane has a dome shape and said three-dimensional support structure has a corresponding dome shape.
6. The method of claim 1 wherein said carrier support sheet is formed of synthetic polymer, metal, or combination thereof and said pressure-sensitive adhesive comprises a non-bituminous synthetic adhesive.
7. The method of claim 6 wherein said adhesive comprises butyl rubber, polyisobutylene, polyisobutyl rubber, an acrylic or acrylate, a vinyl ether, styrene-isoprene-styrene, styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene, styrene-butadiene-styrene, ethylene propylene dime, or a mixture thereof.
8. The method of claim 6 wherein said pressure-sensitive adhesive layers is made of styrene-isoprene-styrene.
9. The method of claim 1 wherein, in said at least one shaped waterproofing membrane, said carrier support sheet comprises low density polyethylene.
10. The method of claim 9 wherein said carrier support sheet comprises a polyolefin blend having at least low density polyethylene.
11. The method of claim 10 wherein said at least one sheet-form waterproofing membrane carrier support sheet comprises high density polyethylene and said at least one shaped waterproofing membrane carrier support sheet comprises a blend of low density polyethylene and high density polyethylene.
12. The method of claim 11 wherein said carrier support sheet and said adhesive layer of said shaped waterproofing membrane are molded integrally as a laminate to obtain said three-dimensional contour.
13. The method of claim 12 wherein said shaped waterproofing membrane laminate further comprises a protective coating layer which is also molded integrally with said carrier support sheet and said adhesive layer, thereby to obtain said three-dimensional contour.
14. The method of claim 1 wherein both of said sheet-formand shaped waterproofing membranes comprise a pressure-sensitive styrene-isoprene-styrene waterproofing adhesive layer protected by a protective acrylate coating; said method further comprising fastening said supporting structure to a formwork by driving nails or other fasteners through said flat collar portion, disposing said at least one shaped waterproofing membrane over said supporting structure; and seaming said shaded waterproofing membranes to said at least one sheet-form waterproofing membrane.
15. The method of claim 1 further comprising seaming together said sheet-form and said shaped membranes prior to casting concrete against them.
16. The method of claim 1 comprising fastening a dome shaped support structure over a tieback on a formwork, disposing a shaped waterproofing membrane having a corresponding dome shaped three-dimensional contour surrounded by a flat collar portion over said dome shaped support structure, and seaming said shaped waterproofing membrane flat collar portion with sheet-form waterproofing membrane installed on said formwork.
17. The method of claim 1 wherein said at least one shaped waterproofing membrane has a three-dimensional dome shape and is installed over a tieback.
18. The method of claim 1 wherein said at least one shaped waterproofing membrane has a cone or cylindrical shape.
19. The method of claim 1 comprising providing a plurality of shaped waterproofing membranes each having a carrier support sheet comprising low density polyethylene and high density polyethylene, a pressure sensitive waterproofing adhesive layer attached to said carrier support sheet and operative to bond to post cast concrete, and attached to said adhesive layer a protective layer operative to protect said adhesive layer from dirt and debris and operative to allow post cast concrete to bond with said adhesive layer; said shaped waterproofing membranes each having a dome-shaped three-dimensional contour surrounded by a flat collar portion;
said method further comprising providing a plurality of support structures having dome shapes corresponding to said dome shaped waterproofing membranes, said dome-shaped waterproofing membranes and said dome-shaped support structures being provided stacked dome over dome together.
20. The method of claim 1 comprising adhering said at least one sheet-form waterproofing membrane to the surface of a concrete formwork surface; adhering said at least one shaped waterproofing membrane to a portion of said surface of said concrete formwork having a tieback, pipe, or other surface detail; and seaming together said at least one sheet-form waterproofing membrane and said at least one shaped waterproofing membrane to provide a continuous waterproofing barrier therebetween.
21. A waterproofed building or civil engineering structure provided by the method of claim 1.
22. A shaped waterproofing membrane, comprising a carrier support sheet having first and second opposed major faces, and, disposed over a first major face thereof, a pressure-sensitive waterproofing adhesive layer operative to bond with concrete cast and allowed to harden against said first major face, said membrane further having a three-dimensional contour surrounded entirely or partially by a flat collar portion.
23. Method for making shaped waterproofing membranes, comprising:
