Abstract
The present invention relates to a method of applying absorbent gelling material (AGM) granules by indirect printing onto an carrier layer for use in an absorbent article, particularly diaper for babies or adults, training pants, pull-up diapers (diaper pants), sanitary napkins, panty liners or the like. These articles typically comprise the carrier layer with the AGM
particles together with further layers, making up the complete article.
particles together with further layers, making up the complete article.
Claims (14)
1. A method for indirectly applying absorbent gelling material (AGM) granules onto a carrier layer (24) for use in an absorbent article, particularly a diaper, which article comprises said carrier layer (24) together with further layers, said method being characterized in that it comprises the following steps:
- AGM granules are taken up by a transfer device (18) from a bulk storage (10) of AGM granules, - said transfer device (18) having recesses (22) on the surface, the recesses (22) having an AGM surface and an opposed backside wherein the number, size and position thereof determine the amount and pattern of AGM granules taken up by the transfer device, - the transfer device (18) being moveable from a loading position adjacent to the bulk storage (10) to a meeting position at which the carrier layer (24) is adjacent to the transfer device (18), - means being provided for retaining the AGM granules inside said recesses during movement of the transfer device (18) to said meeting position, - and means being provided for expelling said AGM granules onto the carrier layer (24) at said meeting position.
2. Method as claimed in claim 1, characterized by applying a glue onto said carrier layer upstream (26) said meeting position before AGM granules are deposited onto the carrier layer (24) from the transfer device (18) in said meeting position and preferably by further applying a glue onto said AGM granules deposited onto said carrier layer (24) downstream (28) of said meeting position.
3. Method as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that said glue is a micro-fiber glue.
4. Method as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that a cover layer carrying glue is applied onto the AGM granules downstream said meeting position.
5. Method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, characterized in that said transfer device (18) is a transfer roll, which is being provided with said recesses on the surface thereof.
6. Method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the carrier layer (24) is transported to and from the meeting position by means of a conveying belt or a rotating support roll (25).
7. Method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, characterized in that said means for retaining the AGM granules in the recesses (22) of the transfer device (18) comprises a vacuum applied to the recesses (22) from inside of the transfer device (18).
8. Method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, characterized in that said expelling means for expelling the AGM granules from the transfer device (18) onto the carrier layer (24) comprises air jet means.
9. Method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, characterized in that said AGM is contained in a hopper (10) having an open bottom passed by the transfer device (18), whereby the AGM granules are filling the recesses (22) of the transfer device by gravity.
10. Method as claimed in any of the claims 1-8, characterized in that said AGM
bulk storage is a container comprising a bed of AGM granules and having an open top passed by the transfer device (18) such that the transfer device extends into said bed of AGM
granules in order for said AGM granules to be lifted up into the recesses (22) in the transfer device (18) by applying a vacuum from the lower surface of the recesses (22

granules in order for said AGM granules to be lifted up into the recesses (22) in the transfer device (18) by applying a vacuum from the lower surface of the recesses (22
11. Method as claimed in any of the preceding claims, characterized by having scraping means (30) for holding back AGM granules from being moved by the transfer device (18) in excess of the amount required to fill the volume of the recesses (22).
12. Method as claimed in claim 11, characterized in that said scraping means (30) is formed by a doctor blade, the distance of which to the transfer means (18) is above 0 mm and up to 1 mm.
13. Apparatus carrying out the process of the above claims for applying AGM
granules onto an AGM carrier layer (24) for an absorbent article, particularly diaper, comprising said carrier layer (24) together with further layers, said apparatus being characterized by a transfer device (18,82) for taking up AGM granules from a bulk storage (10) of AGM granules, said transfer device (18,82) having recesses (22) on the surface the number, the size and position of said recesses determining the amount and pattern of AGM granules taken up by the transfer device (18), the transfer device being moveable from the bulk storage (10) to a position where the carrier layer is passing the transfer device (18).
