SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,867, dated August 4, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, LUGINDA FULLER and HARRIET FULLER, of Detroit, in the county ot'Wayne and State of Michigan, have 5 invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Sashes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new an useful improvements in window-sashes; and it consists in the peculiar combination and the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Figure 1 is an elevation showing the frame with our improved removable sash in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective in section, showing the two-part side rail or stile of the sash. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section showing the twopart side rail or stile of the sash with the appliances adapted to removably secure the two parts together. Fig. 4 is a cross-section showing the lockingbolt in position and in operation.

In the drawings, A represents the windowframe, constructed in the ordinary manner, and having the usual stops for retaining the upper and lower sashes, B, in position, and guiding them when raised or lowered. The side rails or stiles of these sashes are made in two pieces, forming the side rail proper of the sash, and D the auxiliary piece, of the same length as the height of the sash and of the same width as its thickness. The piece D is designed to have a vertical play between the stops of the frameone on each side of the sash. Upon the face of the piece D, and near its lower end, there is secured a stop, a, with an enlarged head, beveled upon its under face like a screw'head, which engages with the slot 1) in the plate 0, which is secured to the adjacent side of the stile 0 near its lower end, such slot being undercut on its inner face, so that when the parts are engaged the stop and undercut plate will form a dovetail. The lower end of thisslot is cut away, as shown in Fig. 2, to allow the head of the stop to enter.

open-ended slot, 0, like the one already described, except that the open end of the slot is presented outwardly instead of downwardly, and its office is to engage with a stop,

f, like the one already described, and for alike -5 5 purpose. The plate (I has formed in it a rectangular hole, h, to engage with the springbolt 6, which is secured near the upper end of the sash. These engaging stops may be simple screws, the upper one performing also the office of aiding to secure the spring latch or bolt in place.

Both sides of the sash are fitted up in the manner described, and if sash-weights are employed in the windowthe cords are secured to the piece or pieces D in the usual manner.

In practice, the sash being in place, and it being desired to remove the same, the springbolts on either side are withdrawn and the top of the sash drawn inward and downward until nearly at right angles to its original position, when the lower stop will be disengaged from its plate by simply pulling the sash inward] y and toward the operator. The reverse of these motions will replace the sash when 5 desired, and the spring-bolt locks the parts together.

We are aware of the Patent No. 276,887, and make no claim to the construction shown therein as forming part of our invention.

What we claim as our invention is-- 1. The piece 0, provided at one end with the plate 0, having slot 1), undercut on its inner face, in combination with the piece D, provided at one end with the stop a and means for securing the other ends, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, with the piece 0, having at one end the plate 0, provided with slot 1) and at the other end the plate having stop f 0 and spring-bolt z, of the piece D, provided with stop a at one end and at the other with the plate d, having slot 0 and hole h, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
