The present invention contemplates a novel sign structure comprising a plurality of panel members having one side edge thereof provided with a substantially U-shaped flange and the opposite side edge thereof provided with a substantially L- shaped flange. The U-shaped flange or channel of one panel fits into and abuts the L-shaped flange of an adjacent panel, and each U-shaped member and L-shaped member is provided with complementary locking means whereby the adjacent panel members are secured in interlocking relationship. The locking means are also adapted for engaging horizontally disposed support beams for supporting the interlocked panels to provide a sign structure.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a novel sign structure wherein a plurality of substantially identical panels are interlocked in adjacent relationship.
It is another object of this invention to provide a novel sign structure wherein the locking means cooperates between a plurality of adjacent panel members for interlocking the panels and for securing or supporting the interlocked panels from a support structure.
Other and further objects and advantageous features of the present invention will hereinafter more fully appear in connection with a detailed description of the drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a sign panel construction according to one embodiment of the invention.
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the rear side of the sign panel shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary view of two panel sections before assembly.
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of FIG.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a sign generally indicated at 8 is shown and as depicted herein comprises two substantially identical panel members 10 and 12, each having a U-shaped end 14 and 16, respectively, and an L- shaped end 18 and 20, respectively. The panels 10 and 12 are disposed next to or adjacent one another so that the U-shaped end 16 of the panel 12 fits into and abuts the L-shaped end 18 of the panel 10. A bar 22 fits into the L-shaped end 20 whereby the front face of the bar 22 and the front faces of the two panels 10 and 12 are coplanar.
The U-shaped end 16 of the panel 12 as shown herein as two downwardly depending tabs 24 and 26 each joined to the U- shaped end 16 by the perpendicularly projecting connectors 28 and 30, respectively. The U-shaped end 16 may have an opening 32 opposite the tab 24. The L-shaped end 18 has slots 34 and 36 opening up to the terminating edge of the L-shaped end 18. The slots 34 and 36 are adapted to receive the connectors 28, 30 respectively whereby the upper edge of slots 34, 36 rest on the connectors 28, 30 so that the latter support the L- shaped end 18. This particular construction is shown in FIG. 3, wherein U-shaped end 40 has a tab 42 and wherein L- shaped end 44 is adapted to be slid horizontally into position over the U-shaped end 40 so that an edge 46 in slot 48 rests on the connector 50 of tab 42.
U-shaped end 14 has two tabs 52, 54 similar to the tabs 24,
26. Bar 22 also has tabs 56, 58 similar to tabs 24, 26. The L- shaped end 20 has has slots similar to the slots 48 in FIG. 3 to receive the tabs 56, 58 whereby the L-shaped end 20 rests on the perpendicular parts of the tabs 56, 58.
As shown herein two lengths of angle iron 60, 62 are attached to poles or to some other permanent fixture or the like (not shown). The bar 22 is first hung on the angle irons 60, 62
by the tabs 56, 58 as shown in the drawings. Then the panel 12 is hung by sliding the slots in L-shaped end 20 onto the perpendicular projecting parts of the tabs 56, 58 and hanging the tabs 24, 26 on the angle irons 60, 62. The panel 10 is hung by sliding the slots 34, 36 0 onto the connectors 28, 30 of tabs 24, 26 between the U-shaped end 16 and the angle irons 60, 62 respectively so that the tabs 24, 26 support the L-shaped end 18 and hanging the tabs 24, 26 on the angle irons 60, 62.
It will be seen that the panels l0, 12 are interlocked, easily assembled, and will not come apart during ordinary use. The panels l0, 12 may be constructed at low cost to provide a useful outdoor advertising sign that may be made of all metal and that may be easily removed and replaced. The bar 22 may be the plumbing bar which is the starting point for installing the panels.
It will be readily apparent that substantially any number of the panels 10 and 12 may be utilized and there is no intention of limiting the invention to the two panels depicted herein. It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
