To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEVEN FRANKLIN BALENTINE, a citlzen of the United States,

and a resident of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented certain Improvements in Settees, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in benches or settees, and relates more especially to the corner fastening devices for connecting the seat and back to the supporting legs.

The primary object of my invention is to provide a corner-fastening device for stools, benches, settees, and similar articles of furniture, which will permit the several parts of the article to be shipped in knock-down form, so as to occupy comparatively little space, and of such peculiar construction that all the parts may be quickly and conveniently assembled by an unskilled person, and securely locked together.

A further object of my invention is to provide a metal corner-fastening of this character, which will form a strong and firm connection between the seat and supporting legs of a bench or settee, and is adapted to cooperate with a metal fixture on the back of a settee for securing said back to the seat.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is more specifically set forth in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the application of my invention to a settee. Fig. 2 is a detail view, showing the form of metal fastening device which is used in connection with the front supporting legs of the settee. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the rear supporting-legs of the settee. Fig. 1 is a detail view of one of the rear corner-fastenings and cooperating metal fixture which is attached to the hack of the settee. Fig. 5 is a front view of the metal fixture attached to the back of the settee. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the locking-lever employed for securing the parts together.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the present instance I have shown my improved corner fastening device as employed in the construction of a settee or lawn-bench, comprising the front and rear Specification of Letters Patent.

supporting- legs 7 and 8, respectively, the seat 9, and the back 10; the seat being COII1- posed of slats attached at their ends to crosspieces or blocks 11, and the back composed of slats attached to supportingstandards 12. It will be understood, however, that any other style of seat and back may be used to form a settee or lawn-bench of suitable design, and also that the particular form of corner-fastening may be employed in constructing a stool or bench without a back.

In carrying out my invention the upper portion of the supporting- legs 7 and 8 are shaped to receive a metal sleeve 13, forming part of the fastening-device, in the present instance said upper portion of each leg being reduced and rounded, as at let, to receive a correspondingly-shaped sleeve which seats upon the shoulder 14 and above the rounded portions the legs may be shaped to form suitable ornamental cap-pieces 15, those of the rear supporting legs being flattened, as at 16, when a back is to be applied to the article of furniture, said flat surface cooperating with the fixture for the back, hereinafter described.

The metal sleeve of each fastening device is provided at one side with a horizontal socket 17, formed integrally therewith to receive the seat of the settec, said socket being extended laterally at each side, as shown in Fig. 1, to provide an additional bearing for said seat, and in order to thoroughly brace this socket it is provided with a pair of depending arms 18, 18, which are spaced apart at their upper ends and meet at their lower ends to form a terminal eye 19, for attachment to the supporting leg at a point below the fastening device proper. The upper part of the sleeve and socket are connected by a strengthening web 20, and in making up those fastening devices which are intended for the rear supporting-legs of a settee, the web, 21, (Fig. t), is slightly enlarged and provided with a bolt-hole, so as to cooperate with the metal fixture of the back.

Each metal corner-fastening device described is provided with a lockinglever 22, pivoted to a flange 22-3 on the underside of the socket, and has an angularly bent member 22, adapted to engage a metal fixture or lug 24:, secured to the underside of the seat or cross-piece thereof, said lug being properly located from the edge of the seat so that the lever will bind thereon when moved into engagement therewith.

The metal fixture for the lower end of each standard of the back comprises an upper socket 25, to receive the lower end of said standard, a lower socket 26, to receive the flange 21 of the metal corner-fastening device, and an intermediate shoulder 27 which is adapted to bear upon the upper flattened end 16 of the rear supportingleg, the socket portion 25 of said fixture being fastened to the standard 12 by bolts 28. The fixture attached to the back is secured to the corner-fastening device of the supporting leg by means of a bolt or pin engaging the registering bolt-holes in the parts 21 and 26.

In practice the corner-fastening devices form part of the supporting-legs, and the metal fixture or sockets 2526 are attached to and carried by the standards of the back; so that the four supporting legs, the seat, and the back may be separated and packed closely together for shipping the settee or lawn-bench, and that in assembling the parts it is only necessary to slip the seat portion into the sockets of the corner-fastenings and swing the bentlever 22 into engagement with the lugs 24: so as to lock the supporting legs securely to the seat; and then apply the back by simply fitting the sockets 26 at the lower end of the back-standards 12 over the flanges 21 of the rear corner-fastenings and insert the pins or bolts through the parts 20 and 26.

When it is desired to construct an ordinary fiat bench or stool, without a back, the corner-fastening shown in Fig. 2, may be used for all four supporting-legs, and in this instance all the supporting-legs would be provided with an ornamental cap-piece 15.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a settee or bench, in combination with the rear supporting legs, of a corner fastening comprising a vertical attaching sleeve fitting upon the supporting leg below the upper end thereof, a horizontal socket at one side of the sleeve, and an upwardlyprojecting flange on the socket; together with a fixture having an upper socket receiving a standard of the back of the settee, a lower socket receiving the aforesaid flange, and a shoulder resting upon the upper end of the supporting leg; substantially as shown. and described.

2. A metal corner-fastening for s'ettees, benches, etc., comprising a vertical attaching sleeve, a horizontal socket at one side of the same, an upwardly-projecting flange, and a locking-lever pivoted to the fastening device; together with a fixture attached to the seat of the settee or bench for locking engagement of the lever therewith, and a fixture adapted to be secured to the back of the settee and having a socket to receive the aforesaid flange, substantially as shown and described.

3. A metal corner-fastening for settees, benches, etc., comprising a vertical attaching sleeve, a horizontal socketat one side of the same, bracingarms depending from the socket, and an upwardly-projecting' flange connecting the upper part of the sleeve and socket and having a bolt-hole; together with a fixture having an upper socket receiving the standard of the back and a lower socket to receive the aforesaid flange of the corner fastening, said lower socket having a bolt hole registering with the bolt-hole in the flange to receive a connecting bolt, substan tially as shown and described.

A metal corner-fastening for settees, benches, etc., comprising a vertical attaching sleeve, a horizontal socket at one side thereof to receive the seat of the settee, bracing-arms depending from the socket, and an upwardly-projecting flange; a locking-lever pivoted to the corner-fastening, and a fixture secured to the seat for locking engagement of the lever therewith; together with fixtures for securing the back of the settee, comprising each an upper socket to receive the back-standard, a lower socket to receive the aforesaid flange, and a shoulder adapted to rest on the corner-post, substantially as shown and described.
