“Un giro in bicicletta è una fuga dalla tristezza”. (J. E. Starrs). Se questa affermazione è vera, allora la soluzione per un momento di sollievo in tempi cupi, come quello che stiamo vivendo, è tra le nostre mani, anzi in sella ad una bici.
La bici, si sa, è da sempre fonte di innumerevoli benefici; ai più noti, come riduzione dello stress, buona forma fisica, migliore qualità della vita, se ne aggiunge anche un altro di non poco conto in era covid e post covid: il distanziamento sociale. Grazie alla possibilità di pedalare in spazi aperti, esplorando luoghi naturali poco conosciuti e frequentati, ci permette di riassaporare momenti di libertà in sicurezza e tranquillità.
E allora perché non pensare ad una vacanza in bici in un territorio poco conosciuto ed affollato come il Molise?
"A bicycle ride is an escape from sadness." (J. E. Starrs). If this statement is true, then the solution for a moment of relief in gloomy times, such as the one we are experiencing, is in our hands, indeed in the saddle of a bicycle.
Bicycling, it is known, has always been a source of innumerable benefits; to the most well-known ones, such as stress reduction, good physical fitness, improved quality of life, we can also add another one of no small importance in the covid and post covid era: social distancing. Thanks to the possibility of cycling in open spaces, exploring unfamiliar and unfrequented natural places, it allows us to savor moments of freedom again in safety and tranquility.
So why not consider a biking vacation in an unfamiliar and crowded area like Molise?
Le vacanze in bicicletta in Italia sono state una delle tendenze dell’estate passata, ma siamo certi che riscuoteranno molto successo anche per il 2021. Non sorprende, se si pensa alle opportunità offerte dal turismo lento: sui pedali si scopre il territorio da vicino ed al proprio ritmo. Ad un ritmo che permette di conoscere ed apprezzare quell’Italia minore fatta di piccoli borghi, paesaggi rurali poco conosciuti, sapori autentici e accoglienza genuina e calorosa.
Inoltre, come affermato da Enrico Caracciolo, giornalista, fotografo e direttore di “Itinerari e Luoghi”, il turismo anche per quest’anno “sarà un turismo da fruire nelle aree più vicine, luoghi belli che conosciamo poco, luoghi che offrono spazi, accoglienza e strade poco trafficate”. Continua lo stesso Caracciolo: “In Molise puoi scoprire l’autenticità del territorio, vivere le strade, anche dove non ci sono piste ciclabili. E’ una regione dal grande impatto paesaggistico, poco trafficata. Le strade garantiscono collegamenti suggestivi tra borghi minori”.
Cycling vacations in Italy were one of the trends of the past summer, but we are sure they will be very successful in 2021 as well. This is not surprising when you think about the opportunities offered by slow tourism: on the pedals you discover the territory up close and at your own pace. At a pace that allows you to get to know and appreciate that minor Italy made up of small villages, little-known rural landscapes, authentic flavors and genuine and warm welcome.
In addition, as stated by Enrico Caracciolo, journalist, photographer and director of "Itineraries and Places," tourism for this year as well "will be a tourism to be enjoyed in the closest areas, beautiful places that we know little about, places that offer space, hospitality and roads with little traffic." Caracciolo himself continues, "In Molise you can discover the authenticity of the territory, experience the roads, even where there are no bike paths. It is a region with a great landscape impact, with little traffic. The roads provide suggestive connections between smaller villages."
E noi con queste affermazioni siamo pienamente d’accordo. Il Molise, infatti, è una regione tutta da scoprire. Terra di riserve che sono patrimonio Unesco per la biodiversità e con delle eccellenze sorprendenti. Con una bassa densità di popolazione le sue strade sono poco trafficate, per non parlare dei percorsi meno battuti, o di scenari suggestivi e pregni di storia come quelli offerti dai Tratturi, le antiche vie della Transumanza utilizzate dai pastori per spostare le greggi dalla costa all’entroterra e viceversa. E’ una terra che offre una grande varietà di paesaggi e percorsi. Dal mare alla montagna, passando per laghi e colline impreziosite da piccoli borghi, il Molise ha veramente tanto da offrire e tra cui scegliere.
And we fully agree with these statements. Molise, in fact, is a region waiting to be discovered. A land of reserves that are Unesco heritage sites for biodiversity and with surprising excellences. With a low population density, its roads have little traffic, not to mention less traveled routes, or evocative scenery steeped in history such as those offered by the Tratturi, the ancient Transhumance routes used by shepherds to move their flocks from the coast to the hinterland and vice versa. It is a land that offers a great variety of landscapes and routes. From the sea to the mountains, passing through lakes and hills embellished with small villages, Molise truly has so much to offer and from which to choose.
La prima scelta da fare, a seconda dei giorni a disposizione è il percorso: se si desidera fare una vacanza itinerante, spostandosi di giorno in giorno in un luogo diverso oppure se scegliere un luogo come base da cui partire ogni giorno per un percorso diverso magari con tour guidati. Nel primo caso è suggeribile programmare una vacanza di più giorni mentre nel secondo anche un week-end potrebbe risultare sufficiente. Il livello di preparazione atletica potrebbe far pensare ad un ostacolo difficile da superare per chi veste i panni del ciclista pochi week-end l’anno, ma in realtà, grazie alle bici con pedalata assistita, anche lunghe distanze risultano affrontabili con facilità.
The first choice to make, depending on the days available, is the itinerary: whether you want to have an itinerant vacation, moving from day to day to a different place, or whether to choose one place as a base from which to depart each day for a different route perhaps with guided tours. In the former case it is suggested to plan a multi-day vacation while in the latter even a weekend might be sufficient. The level of athletic training might suggest a difficult obstacle to overcome for those who wear the shoes of a cyclist a few weekends a year, but in reality, thanks to pedal-assisted bikes, even long distances are easily tackled.

Per chi sceglie un percorso itinerante, spostandosi dal mare alla montagna o viceversa, raccomandiamo ovviamente un buon equipaggiamento tecnico, buoni polmoni (le salite molisane possono farsi sentire) e tappe da non perdere come Termoli con il suo borgo antico e lungomare, Larino con la cattedrale gotica e l’anfiteatro romano, il lago di Guardialfiera, Civitacampomarano con le suo opere di street art, le Gole di Morgia Schiavone nel territorio di Lucito (un paesaggio naturale incantevole creato dalle rocce scavate dal fiume Biferno), Campobasso con i suoi saliscendi ed il Castello Monforte, e poi ancora Castelpetroso con la sua Basilica, Guardiaregia, Roccamandolfi con il suo ponte tibetano, le cascate di Carpinone, il suggestivo Teatro Sannitico di Pietrabbondante e la città romana di Sepino. Sono solo alcuni dei luoghi da non perdere in Molise.
For those who choose an itinerant route, moving from the sea to the mountains or vice versa, we obviously recommend good technical equipment, good lungs (Molise's climbs can make themselves felt) and must-see stops such as Termoli with its old town and waterfront, Larino with its Gothic cathedral and Roman amphitheater, the Guardialfiera lake, Civitacampomarano with its street art works, the Morgia Schiavone Gorges in the territory of Lucito (an enchanting natural landscape created by the rocks carved by the Biferno River), Campobasso with its ups and downs and the Monforte Castle, and then again Castelpetroso with its Basilica, Guardiaregia, Roccamandolfi with its Tibetan bridge, the waterfalls of Carpinone, the striking Samnite Theater of Pietrabbondante and the Roman city of Sepino. These are just some of the places not to be missed in Molise.
Quindi, che siate Bartali o Paperino alle prese con la vostra Graziella, a tutti voi non ci resta che raccomandare un elemento essenziale che non può mancare nel vostro bagaglio: occhi nuovi per lasciarvi stupire ed ammaliare dall’inconsapevole fascino di questa terra ed un cuore pronto ad essere scaldato dalla genuinità dei luoghi e delle persone.
