Quanto ci mancava osservare il mare? Era il 1977 e a quel tempo, il cantante Lucio Dalla pubblica il suo settimo album "Com'è profondo il mare" titolo dell'omonima canzone che ben presto diventa un cult della musica italiana. Un testo ricco e complesso, che lo stesso musicista definisce una delle sue più belle poesie di cui però, nonostante molteplici esegesi, non se ne comprende a pieno il significato. Una cosa però appare certa: l'artista scrisse questa stupenda canzone osservando il mare delle Isole Tremiti dalla sua dimora estiva in località Cala Matano. Ma perchè proprio lì? Lo stesso musicista spiega in un'intervista che "...Queste isole sono così ricche di storia, di cultura e di leggende che vale la pena conoscerle per poterne godere a piene mani".
How much did we miss watching the sea? It was 1977 and at that time, singer Lucio Dalla released his seventh album "Com'è profondo il mare" title of the song of the same name that soon became a cult of Italian music. A rich and complex lyric, which the musician himself calls one of his most beautiful poems of which, however, despite multiple exegesis, its full meaning is not fully understood. One thing, however, seems certain: the artist wrote this wonderful song while observing the sea of the Tremiti Islands from his summer home in Cala Matano. But why there? The musician himself explains in an interview that "...These islands are so rich in history, culture and legends that it is worth getting to know them in order to enjoy them to the fullest."
A pensarci bene, in Italia, non si sente parlare spesso di questo luogo. Persino quando si è soliti volare con la fantasia ci si immagina dispersi in Paesi lontani, sdraiati al prendere il sole in spiagge esotiche, immersi in acque cristalline, e ci si dimentica che in Italia esiste un'isola nell'Adriatico che è un vero e proprio angolo di paradiso turisticamente meno frequentato rispetto ad altre isole italiane più famose, economicamente più accessibile, visitabile in giornata e facilmente raggiungibile anche scegliendo di partire dal nostro agriturismo in Molise. Anzitutto, una breve rassegna storico-geografica: le Isole Tremiti, unico arcipelago italiano del Mare Adriatico, sono riconosciute e tutelate dal 1989 come Riserva naturale Marina per via del loro habitat naturale tra i più belli del Mar Mediterraneo. Ci sono incertezze sull'origine del nome: secondo alcuni studiosi pare derivi dalle frequenti, ma lievi, scosse sismiche in mare che le farebbero appunto tremare, ragion per cui si desumerebbe che migliaia di anni fa l'isola era un tutt'uno ma poi in seguito frantumata da un terremoto.Un'altra ipotesi è che il nome Tremiti rimandi più semplicemente ai "tre monti" che spuntano dalle acque del mare all'orizzonte. Un'antica leggenda millenaria avvolge però l'arcipelago nato per mano dell’eroe mitologico greco Diomede che qui sbarcò dopo la caduta della città di Troia (le Isole Tremiti vengono per questo soprannominate anche Isole Diomedee). Secondo la leggenda, Diomede, dopo aver creato il Gargano, gettò in mare alcuni ciottoli di pietra che gli erano avanzati dando forma così alle tre isole. Leggenda vuole infine che l'eroe abbia trascorso in questi luoghi sperduti i suoi ultimi giorni in vita tant'è che una credenza popolare vte il periodo di espansione con la civiltà greca; successivamente, le isole finirono in mano all'impero romano e da lì un susseguirsi di vicissitudini di conquiste sino all'ottenimento della piena autonomia comunale nel 1932.
Come to think of it, in Italy, we do not hear about this place very often. Even when we usually fly with our imagination, we imagine ourselves scattered in distant countries, lying sunbathing on exotic beaches, immersed in crystal-clear waters, and we forget that in Italy there is an island in the Adriatic Sea that is a real corner of paradise that is less frequented by tourists than other more famous Italian islands, economically more accessible, can be visited in a day and is easily reached even by choosing to leave from our farmhouse in Molise. First of all, a brief historical-geographical review: the Tremiti Islands, the only Italian archipelago in the Adriatic Sea, have been recognized and protected since 1989 as a Marine Nature Reserve because of their natural habitat, which is among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean Sea. There are uncertainties about the origin of the name: according to some scholars, it seems to derive from the frequent, but mild, seismic tremors in the sea that would precisely cause them to shake, reasoning that thousands of years ago the island was a whole but then later shattered by an earthquake.Another hypothesis is that the name Tremiti refers more simply to the "three mountains" that rise from the waters of the sea on the horizon. A thousand-year-old legend, however, shrouds the archipelago that was born at the hands of the Greek mythological hero Diomedes, who landed here after the fall of the city of Troy (the Tremiti Islands are also nicknamed the Diomedes Islands for this reason). According to legend, Diomedes, after creating the Gargano, threw into the sea some stone pebbles that were left over, thus shaping the three islands. Finally, legend has it that the hero spent his last days in life in these remote places, so much so that a popular belief vte the period of expansion with the Greek civilization; later, the islands ended up in the hands of the Roman Empire and from there a succession of vicissitudes of conquests until obtaining full municipal autonomy in 1932.
Ma arriviamo al dunque ed ecco subito cosa vi aspetta: lasciata l'auto alle spalle del porto di Termoli (date le ridotte dimensioni, sull'isola non è concesso spostarsi con un mezzo proprio), l'impatto emotivo che si ha una volta sbarcati è immediato: si viene travolti dal verde della macchia mediterranea coi suoi pini di Aleppo e le sue erbe spontanee, dal bianco delle rocce sino all'azzurro intenso del mare accompagnato dallo strido di gabbiani e diomedee in volo. L'arcipelago si compone di cinque piccole isole di cui solo due però abitate, San Domino e San Nicola. Le altre sono l'Isola Capraia, il Cretaccio e la più lontana Pianosa, visitabili esclusivamente tramite piacevoli escursioni in barca. San Domino, un tempo rifugio dei pescatori, è oggi certamente l'isola più attrezzata a livello ricettivo con i suoi Hotel, B&B e villaggi turistici; colpisce certamente per la sua distesa pineta, i suoi boschi di leccio e le coltivazioni di viti e ulivi.Spostarsi all'isola di San Nicola è semplice dato che le due isole sono molto vicine; questo è il posto perfetto per gli appassionati di storia e mitologia. L'isola, con il suo abitato e i suoi due imponenti torrioni medievali, è in grado di trasportare il visitatore indietro nel tempo, quando nel Medioevo la solitudine del luogo piacque a varie comunità di monaci che qui si succedettero nei secoli dando vita all'attuale pittoresco centro storico. Immancabile è la visita dentro l'Abbazia di Santa Maria a Mare che pare essere stata edificata nel IX secolo da parte di Benedettini Cassinesi, e al Castello dei Badiali, fondato da monaci Cistercensi nel XII secolo per volere di Carlo D'Angiò. Da quest'ultimo, è possibile ammirare un panorama mozzafiato su tutto l'arcipelago!
But let's get to the point and here is what awaits you immediately: having left your car behind the port of Termoli (due to its small size, you are not allowed to travel on the island by your own vehicle), the emotional impact you have once you disembark is immediate: you are overwhelmed by the green of the Mediterranean scrub with its Aleppo pines and wild herbs, by the white of the rocks up to theintense blue of the sea accompanied by the screeching of seagulls and diomedee in flight. The archipelago consists of five small islands of which only two, however, are inhabited, San Domino and San Nicola. The others areCapraia Island, Cretaccio and the most distant Pianosa, which can only be visited by pleasant boat trips. San Domino, once a fishermen's refuge, is now certainly the best equipped island in terms of accommodation with its hotels, B&Bs and resorts; it is certainly striking for its expansive pine forest, its holm-oak woods and its cultivations of vines and olive trees.Moving to St. Nicholas Island is easy since the two islands are very close; this is the perfect place for history and mythology enthusiasts. The island, with its built-up area and its two imposing medieval towers, is able to transport the visitor back in time, when in the Middle Ages the solitude of the place appealed to various communities of monks who succeeded each other here over the centuries, giving rise to the current picturesque old town. Not to be missed is a visit inside the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare, which appears to have been built in the 9th century by Cassinese Benedictines, and to the Castle of the Badiali, founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century at the behest of Charles of Anjou. From the latter, it is possible to admire a breathtaking view of the entire archipelago!
Ma si sa, è sopratutto il mare delle Tremiti ad ipnotizzare gli occhi di chi lo ammira. La costa dell'isola è frastagliata e perciò piena di cale, baie nascoste e grotte pazzesche visitabili con tour in barca prenotabili sul posto. Tra le più suggestive troviamo la Grotta del Bue Marino, dove in passato viveva la foca monaca, oppure la Grotta del Sale, la Grotta delle viole, la Grotta delle Rondinelle e la Grotta delle Murene. L'unica spiaggia sabbiosa attrezzata è Cala delle Arene ma comunque il litorale è spazioso e pieno di posti dove prendere il sole e tuffarsi tra le onde. Tuttavia, vi sveliamo un segreto: non tutti sanno che il vero tesoro dell'isola non si trova in supercificie ma bensì nei fondali! A tutti gli appassionati di snorkeling, suggeriamo di munirsi di maschera e boccaglio, prendere un bel respiro e tuffarsi in acqua o altrimenti di affidarsi nelle mani di esperti subacquei locali per regalarvi immersioni da favola in un'atmosfera magica e surreale.
But you know, it is above all the Tremiti sea that mesmerizes the eyes of those who admire it. The island's coastline is rugged and therefore full of coves, hidden bays and crazy caves that can be visited with boat tours that can be booked locally. Among the most striking are the Grotta del Bue Marino, where the monk seal once lived, or the Grotta del Sale, Grotta delle Viole, Grotta delle Rondinelle and Grotta delle Murene. The only equipped sandy beach is Cala delle Arene but still the shoreline is spacious and full of places to sunbathe and dive into the waves. However, we'll let you in on a secret: not everyone knows that the real treasure of the island is not to be found on the surface but rather on the seabed! To all snorkeling enthusiasts, we suggest that you equip yourself with a mask and snorkel, take a deep breath and dive into the water or otherwise trust in the hands of experienced local divers to give you fabulous dives in a magical and surreal atmosphere.
Ai gastronauti, sappiate anzitutto che la dieta sull'isola è ovviamente Mediterranea con qualche accenno alla cucina Partenopea; vi aspettano prelibate pietanze cucinate col pescato del giorno. Si va da succulente verdure garganiche, salicornia, friggitelli, frutti di mare crudi e cotti, polipetti alle grigliate di carne, spaghetti alle cozze accompagnati da un buon vino locale. Il tutto a prezzi abbordabili sia a pranzo che a cena. Ad ogni modo, se siete alla ricerca di un pasto veloce, oltre ai numerosi ristoranti, per pochi euro sia su San Domino che su San Nicola troverete aperti chioschi e minimarket.
To the gastronauts, know first of all that the diet on the island is obviously Mediterranean with some hints of Partenopean cuisine; delicious dishes cooked with the catch of the day await you. They range from succulent Gargano vegetables, salicornia, friggitelli, raw and cooked seafood, and octopus to grilled meats, spaghetti with mussels accompanied by a good local wine. All at affordable prices for both lunch and dinner. Anyway, if you are looking for a quick meal, in addition to the many restaurants, for a few euros on both San Domino and San Nicola you will find kiosks and convenience stores open.
Adesso probabilmente appare più chiaro il perché Lucio Dalla amava tanto questo posto. A conferma di questo legame, durante la visita fate caso alle pareti: non è raro infatti imbattersi in targhe, scritte e dediche rivolte a lui sparse per l'isola, quasi a sottolineare l'affetto che c’era (e continua ad esserci) tra l'artista e gli isolani.
