Known as “Madame Butterfly” during her competitive years, Meagher is a former Olympic gold medalist, world record holder and six-time NCAA champion … she was a member of the 1980, ’84 and ’88 United States Olympic teams … in her freshman year at Cal, Meagher won the first of her NCAA crowns, taking the 200-yard butterfly … she later won the 100 and 200 butterfly in 1985, the 200 fly in 1986 and the 100 and 200 fly in 1987 … the long-time Bears’ record holder in both those events, she still ranks very high in the 100 fly and in the 200 fly at Cal … Meagher was a triple gold medalist at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, winning the 100-meter fly and 200 fly, both in Olympic-record times, and the 400-meter medley relay … at the 1988 Olympic Games, Meagher won a bronze medal in the 200 fly and, swimming in a qualifying heat, earned a silver medal as part of the United States’ 4x100 medley relay … she won world championships in the 100-meter fly (1982) and 200-meter fly (1986) … in 1984, Meagher received the Olympia Award and was named the Kentucky Sportswoman of the Year and in 1983 she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame … Meagher won the Honda Award for swimming in 1985 and 1987 and was selected the overall winner of the 1987 Honda Broderick Cup as the nation’s most outstanding female college athlete … in 2002, Meagher was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame (BASHOF).
