Green Tara

In a legend it is said that Tara, in one of her ancient manifestations as Yeshe Dawa (Moon of Primordial Awareness), dedicated offerings to the Buddha Tonyo Drupa and was instructed by him on the concept of bodhicitta. Approached by some monks, she was told that she should aim at a rebirth as a male, in order to reach enlightenment. She readily replied that being female was an obstacle to enlightenment only for those who were obtuse and not yet enlightened. She then made the decision to be reborn as a female bodhisattva until the Samsara had emptied. After tens of millions of years of meditation Yeshe Dawa manifested her supreme enlightenment as Tara.

Green Tara is the goddess of enlightened action, the main female manifestation of enlightenment.

She sits on a white moon cushion in an active posture: her right foot rests on a lotus flower ready to offer her help to those in need.
Her left hand, at heart level, is in the mudra of giving refuge.
In both hands she has a blue uptala flower indicating the present time, from which two buds emerge, representing respectively the past and the future.

Her body is green, a symbol of the element air and movement.
Green Tara represents the compassionate activity and the knowledge of the intrinsic vacuity of every dualism.
It offers help and protection, free from the threats of the outside world and allows to overcome the obstacles of ignorance and fears both inside and outside.
