Angkor Wat Fine Art Photos

Angkor Wat, located near Siem Reap in Cambodia, is the world’s largest religious structure. It covers approximately 400 acres and represents the pinnacle of Khmer architecture.

History

King Suryavarman II, who reigned from 1113 to around 1150, built Angkor Wat in the first half of the 12th century.

Originally, it served as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire.

However, by the end of the 12th century, it had become a Buddhist site. The construction process took an estimated 30 years.

Geography

Geographically, Angkor Wat is about five miles north of the modern Cambodian city of Siem Reap. The temple complex spans a site measuring 162.6 hectares.

Culture

Culturally, the temple was a dedication to the gods Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu.

The five central towers of Angkor Wat symbolize the peaks of Mount Meru, the dwelling place of the gods according to Hindu mythology. The temple walls boast high-quality bas-relief sculptures representing Hindu gods and ancient Khmer scenes, as well as scenes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana.

After the Cham people of modern-day Vietnam sacked Angkor in 1177. King Jayavarman VII, who reigned from 1181 to around 1220, decided that the Hindu gods had failed him.

He dedicated his new capital, Angkor Thom, to Buddhism. Consequently, Angkor Wat became a Buddhist shrine. Many of its carvings and statues of Hindu deities were replaced by Buddhist art.
