Brave of this movie to depict all scientists as vain goobers who do exactly what they want at all times under the guise of scientific discovery. Jessup is basically the biggest bastard on earth, just treating the people around him like shit and never once looking inward so that he can instead do so much ayahuasca that he kills a Komodo dragon. Bob Balaban, the king, chuckles condescendingly at Jessup’s little experiments and then goes along with them with no actual resistance. Before daddy Cronenberg unleashed his iconic The Fly crazy uncle Russell took us to the depths of humanity in an unconventional and controversial film that makes us realize why he's one of the most underrated visionaries in cinema.
The truth is that by looking at the poster and perhaps with some of the special effects (which haven't aged that well, though still have their charm), one could easily believe this was a 90s sci-fi movie. There is something almost transcendental about the subject (no pun intended). It almost drags at first, and audiences may feel bored, but as the film transitions from a drama to a sci-fi horror film, Ken Russell is left to be unhinged and unhinged he goes.…
Wow, this is excellent. Profound philosophical concepts explored in the most psychedelic and skin-crawling style. A wonderfully ambitious film that highlighted Ken Russell's remarkable spiritual vision. Despite being completely abstract and strange, it manages to remain a free-flowing odyssey on love, consciousness, and the human drive throughout the entire runtime. Many moments felt very videodrome-like, and overall Cronenberg-esque, which I absolutely welcomed. And as the film goes, it pushes deeper and deeper into the most hellish episodes and the genuine depths of psychosis. Great stuff.
