It must have been quite a feat for ABC-TV to get Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, still at the height of their popularity, for a two-night Movie of the Week event. I'm sure it caused quite a stir. But I'm willing to bet that half of the audience who tuned in for the first night didn't bother to return the following night. Because, as great as it sounds on paper, the reality is that the film is frightfully dull. It's just two-and-a-half hours of miserable people being miserable to each other. Liz is miserable. Richard is miserable. Their friends are miserable. Their kids are miserable. Even their fucking NANNY is miserable. And any scene that doesn't feature miserable people consists of businessmen sitting around spouting business jargon at each other. O M G it is sooooooo boring. Get a divorce, don't get a divorce...just leave us out of it, PLEASE.
Scavenger Hunt #36-March 2018
Task #27 Watch a movie with one of these famous off screen and on screen couples: Katharine Hepburn & Spencer Tracy , Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton , Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall
Note: I've seen all the Katharine Hepburn & Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall and it looks like I had some minor Burton & Taylor left.
My review:
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor wallow in their own self-importance. I'm not sure I really cared about this story at all.
They were eager to cheat on each other and it was basically white rich people problems. Reminded me of Haneke's Happy End where the rich people wanted to die and the poor people wanted to live. Burton & Taylor just seemed so miserable and caused all their own problems. ICK!!!!!!!!!
Being totally honest here, this long-winded film wouldn't even be worth a comment if it didn't star Burton and Taylor, and even with them it is pretty terrible.
This farrago was made for HTV (a Welsh television network) and was originally presented in two parts to be watched over consecutive nights, a divorce seen from the perspective of both the husband, and then the wife. The trouble is, we don't believe in or care about the characters.
Burton looks haggard and tired, and although there is a flash or two of the charm he often brought to the screen, it isn't really enough in a running time of nearly three hours. Taylor looks luminous, and again there is a hint…
"no matter what happened, we had something special, we had something more than most"
yes you did liz 😭🤧
i actually really enjoyed this. interesting format, and fabulous acting. maybe a little autobiographical for burton and taylor who divorced eachother shortly after, but burton especially delivers an aching performance. a little bit long for what it was, but overall a good watch.
Watching these knowing that they got divorced the next year makes it harder to separate the real marriage and this movie divorce.
This movie felt like you were accidentally overhearing your neighbors fight, but instead of being juicy and compelling, they were just loud boring and you wanted them to shut up. They shudda let Liz and Dick improvise without a script. That would have been a way better movie.
Well.. that’s definitely a movie…
Listen I was excited for this, I really was but it was just a big bore. The only thing notable in this thing is Elizabeth’s performance which comes as no shock because she could act her ass off regardless the material.
Richard old chap.. sorry you were a bit dull in this one.
I literally checked out every time Taylor wasn’t on screen.
I would have been better off observing my parents on a Tuesday night after work.

longest 74 minutes of my life, though i loved seeing elizabeth wearing the 16th century la peregrina pearl <3
I can't even give this movie one ⭐. It bored me to tears. Even the acting stunk, it was a horrible boring movie..
Why is Dick Cavett's poor dead wife always in movies like this playing the boozy and extravagant friend?????
