Sometimes orchids can surprise you. We all know that orchids can take a long time to do anything, but there are times when they catch you out.
Back in April, I bought home two (rather large) orchids as my relative was no longer able to care for them. The Oncidium type orchid has bloomed already, but the Dendrobium Phalaenopsis has done nothing. Literally nothing. Well…absorbed water when it was given, but nothing else.
Whilst I was watering it this morning I noticed something different about it. I had previously thought there was a bloom spike developing in the crown of leaves on the newest cane, which has not moved since I brought the orchid home.
But, this orchid has a flower spike growing out from between some of the leaves on the newest cane! At the moment, it’s about 3 inches in length and has the potential for quite a few blooms.
I can remember this orchid having green flowers with a dark purple lip, but until it blooms for me, I’d rather not try looking for it online to identify it. Here’s hoping for some lovely blooms, and a positive identification for this plant.
Happy growing!
Clare
