Nars Zulu Franken

There’s a mythical color out there called Zulu, made by Nars. It was a dark forest green creme, limited edition. Lots of gals are drooling over this color and apparently it’s being scalped on eBay for ridiculous amounts. I’ve never actually seen Zulu in real life but I’ve seen a few photos online. So here I’ve tried to re-create it. Be gentle :).

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperating for these photos. In real life, this is a dark green but you can tell it’s green rather than black. Sadly, my camera can’t tell the difference all that well.

The trick for this one is NO shimmer or opaque colors. You need medium yellow creme and medium blue creme and black creme. Pick the most transparent ones you can find. If the colors are opaque, the result will be a muddy green. From what I see of Zulu, it’s a green jelly creme, so it needs to be mixed from the most translucent colors you can find. This photo is three coats, but it looked fine with two. Also: it needs a good shiny topcoat.

I used off-brand Japanese dollar store nail polishes for this. Nothing expensive is needed. Pour out some yellow, add blue drop by drop until you get medium green. Add the black drop by drop until you get a pine-tree green. Add a few drops of yellow and mix in. Add the same amount of black and mix in and you should have your very own Zulu.

About nevertoomuchglitter

Nail artist. Wanderer. I'm a color-holic, in fact, it was my love of color that brought me to the nail art world. Well, that, and the fact I was too cheap to pay crazy Japanese prices for nail polish while living in Tokyo, so I had to start mixing my own. That's how NTMG began.
