Swatch My Stash! China Glaze #6: Light Blue & Periwinkle

Happy Halloween!!  Wooooooooooo! (That’s me, pretending to be a ghost, blog-style. It doesn’t really translate well in writing. But still, “A” for effort, and all that.)

For today’s edition of Swatch My Stash, I’m tackling my China Glaze light blues and periwinkles. I have 10 polishes to share in this post.

Dashboard Dreamer is from the Spring 2015 Road Trip Collection. It is a light sky or baby blue with pink shimmer. The formula for this polish is rather difficult. It is thin/sheer, and I generally need 3 coats for full opacity, although I don’t have trouble with it ridging on me or leaving low spots.

In spite of the difficult formula, I love this polish. It’s one of my favorites, and I never tire of seeing it on my nails. It always gives me a bit of a happy lift. When this collection first came out, this was the polish I wanted the most. And it was immediately sold out in all the stores around me. This happened before I had dipped my toes into the rapids of online shopping for nail polish. I looked everywhere for this. It took quite a while, but I was so excited when I finally got a full bottle of it. (I had a mini previously.) This one is a keeper, for sure.

Chalk Me Up is from the Spring 2017 Spring Pastels Collection. It is a sky blue creme. I seem to recall seeing reviews of this polish that indicated it had a good formula. But my bottle isn’t the greatest. Mine is thin and runny. I generally need 2-3 coats for full opacity, depending on application technique.

This is such a pretty color. I love this particular tone of blue. But I don’t love the formula. I can’t believe I’m typing this out loud, but I think I’m going to send this one to the destash pile. Yikes! What am I thinking?!?

cg-consultamymanicurist-sm

Cons-Ulta My Manicurist is from the 2014 Ulta Exclusive Collection. It is a light sky or baby blue creme. The formula is not the greatest. My bottle is thin and watery. I neglected to make notes of how many coats I needed to get this one opaque, but I suspect it was at least 3.

I don’t love this polish. I know that’s hard to believe, given what a ho I am for the blues. I think I would love the color tone, which is very pretty, if the formula was better. As it is, I don’t love the color enough to outweigh how finicky it is. It is heading for the destash pile.

Don’t Be Shallow is from the Spring 2016 House of Color Collection. It is a light and airy sky blue crelly. The formula for this polish is painfully thin and watery. The first coat is almost like you’ve put nothing on the nail, and it needs at least 3 coats to be fully opaque.

I went back and forth on this polish. At first, I thought I wouldn’t keep it because of the difficult formula. Then, I thought I would keep it because it was so, so pretty. It looks like water on the nail, and the color is light and airy. After giving it some more thought, I finally decided I didn’t like the color enough to put up with the formula. And so, this one is heading to the destash pile.

UV Meant To Be is a mid-tone, slightly darker sky blue creme. The formula on my bottle is good. It was opaque for me in 2 coats.

This is a nice blue. It’s calm and peaceful. I like this slightly darker “light” blue color tone on my nails, and the formula was pretty good, too. This one is a keeper.

cg-bahamianescape2-DESTASH-sm

Bahamian Escape is from the Winter 2008 Bahama Blues Collection. It’s a dark to medium sky blue. The formula on mine was great. It was opaque for me in 1 coat, which was a bit of a surprise.

I love everything about this polish. The formula was great, and I love this color. It really is like looking into a perfect, cloudless sky. I feel like this one and UV Meant To Be are similar. I might decide I don’t need both of them, eventually. But, for now, this one is also a keeper.

Pearl Jammin’ is from the Fall 2016 Rebel Collection. It is a very light, gray-toned blue with a strong golden shimmer. The formula is not the greatest. It’s not difficult to work, but it is a bit thin and watery. I generally need 3 coats to reach the level of opacity I prefer.

I love this. I fell for it hard when the Rebel Collection came out. I wasn’t the only one. I think a lot of people were mad for it. It doesn’t have the greatest formula, but I think that might be down to the shimmer. This polish looks like soft candlelight across the nails. It shifts and shimmers in different lighting conditions. It’s gorgeous and absolutely worth the potential of having to do 3 coats. This one is a definite keeper!

cg-secretperiwinkle2-sm

Secret Peri-Wink-Le is from the Fall 2008 Operation Colour Collection. It is a dusty, slightly grayed-out periwinkle (as the name would suggest). The formula for this polish is good. It’s opaque in 2 easy coats.

This polish is rather an “oldie” in my stash. But it’s also a goodie. It is well-used and well-loved. And it’s a keeper!

cg-bohoblues2-sm

Boho Blues is from the Spring 2015 Road Trip Collection. This is a lovely cornflower blue. The formula on mine is good. It’s opaque in 2-3 coats (2 coats on some fingers, and 3 on others).

This polish is such a beauty! My swatch picture is horrible. I apologize for that. I took this picture before I really started in on the idea of regularly swatching and photographing my polishes. So I hadn’t quite gotten the hang of it just yet. But this polish is sublime. I love, love, love the color tone. It is bright and cheerful, but with just a slight bit of dustiness to it. This is a keeper!

cg-fadeintohue2-sm

Fade Into Hue is from the Spring 2013 Avant Garden Collection. It is a very grayed-out/dusty periwinkle — almost a cadet blue. The formula is sheer but good. It stays where you put it, and it is opaque in 2 fairly easy coats.

This polish is so pretty and soft. It’s a beautiful transition polish from Spring into Summer or Fall into Winter. I think it might be beautiful in some Winter manicures, too. I love it. It reminds me of faded blue jeans. I was thinking this polish and Secret Peri-Wink-Le might be similar, but looking at my photos has made me change my mind. This one is more pastel with more of a gray undertone to it. At any rate, it is a keeper. Even if I didn’t adore it, I’ve already used one-third to one-half of my bottle, so there wouldn’t be much point in destashing it now — ha, ha!

That wraps up my light blues and periwinkles, China Glaze-style! I didn’t have as many of these colors in my stash as I expected. Learning something new about my stash is more than half the fun of this long project. Next week, I intend to move on to the medium blues. Remember how I said, when we started on this particular color family, that I had a LOT of blues? At least you know I’m honest, right?

  1. Dashboard Dreamer is really pretty on you! I’ve always felt that if I have to wear a pastel color, I look best in a powder blue like that.

Don’t Be Shallow is SOOOOO pretty, I am actually surprised you are willing to part with it. But if that’s how it looks at 3 coats… I can still see low spots in your pic. Oh man. Heartbreaking. I’d almost want to leave that one open to see if it thickens. Not sure how that would be to apply though.

    1. Yeah, Don’t Be Shallow kind of broke my heart. I went back and forth on whether to keep it or not. Because it is so freaking pretty. I love the color and the look of it on the nail — when it looks like it’s supposed to, that is. But at 3 coats, it still has a lot of low spots. It’s a devil to get even, too.

Dashboard Dreamer is a favorite of mine. I love it so much. Even though the formula really is pretty terrible. Maybe it will get better as it ages — ha, ha!
