Church of Sclafani Bagni

According to tradition the name Sclafani derives from Greek Esculapiifanum that means "sacred to Aesculapius" maybe for the presence in the place of a temple dedicated to him.

In the Greek and Roman periods Sclafani was founded on the homonymous cliff and it became a flourishing agricultural village under Arabic domination.
In 1330 it was led by a powerful lord of the place, Matteo Sclafani, who restored and lived in the Norman castle. In 1953 to Sclafani was added the appositive Bagni (baths) referring to the presence of thermal spa.

At the entry of the little village there is Porta Soprana an important monument overlooked by the coat of arms of Sclafani family. The Cathedral Church and the Chiesa of S. Giacomo (Church of St. James) are also very important; the latter is the oldest of the village and is decorated with stuccoes by Serpotta.
