Metoposaurus - Amphibian of the Triassic

Suggestion

Hello, reader. In here I will be talking about an amphibious creature which could come to Ark: Survival Evolved, the Metoposaurus.

Overview

The Metoposaurus was an amphibian which lived in the Late Triassic, weighing about 1,000 pounds and being around 10 feet long. It had small, weak limbs, sharp teeth, and a flat head. This creature mainly ate fish and evidently had a sensory system able to detect changes in water pressure in a similar way to that of a fish.

However, as you may already know, Ark isn’t exactly a stickler for realism. How can we make this creature useful without going too far?

In the Game - Wild Animal

In Ark itself, the Metoposaurus would be a large amphibian around 25 feet long, primarily lurking in deep rivers or off the coasts of beaches. While it mainly predates on fish, it can also make a drastic lunge out of water to catch land animals off-guard, hold them with its thin teeth, and drown them in the water. When stalking land animals or anything within the water, it’s eyes will be visible above the surface, but due to its flat posture the rest of the body would be concealed below. With the interesting feature of retractable teeth, it can appear as a lumbering giant yet switch to a menacing beast at the drop of a pin. It also has the ability to track disturbances in the water made by any large creatures due to a sensory system similar to the lateral line within fishes.

While this creature excels at moving and fighting in the water, it can also move on land, albeit sluggishly. Its lunges can provide short bursts of speed, but that won’t be enough for it. Due to this, whenever challenged with a threat on land, it will lunge straight for the water and wait where it can fight its opponent on more favorable grounds.

Utility as a Tame

When tamed, the Metoposaurus’ uses are widely helpful. The creature can hold any small-medium sized animal, whether it be for moving or offensive purposes such as biting, thrashing, or drowning. Due to its retractable teeth, it can be allured into a nursery state in which it can carry infant animals and eggs safely within its jaws even through oceanic environments, at the cost of being unable to fight with its jaws rendered unusable. The creature can be ridden without a saddle, however one is recommended as it will provide a favorable amount of oxygen within the saddle’s chamber. Last but not least, with its sensory system it can track any large threat in the water at ample distance and warn you of them before they reach you, e.g a Spinosaurus, a Mosasaurus, or a lost Rex.

This creature is tamed by feeding it fish while it basks on the land. Once you feed it enough fish, it’ll allow you to ride it where you must kill enough aquatic fauna, or else it’ll ditch you and swim off. You cannot have any large carnivores nearby you pre-taming, as it will flee to water at the sight of them, and/or ditch you if running into any large ones while on the fishing spree. It’s cautious nature will be nullified once it is tamed however, so you won’t have to worry about it running off in the heat of battle ergo the Moschops.
