Patrick Noon
By his death in 1863, Eugène Delacroix was the most revered and influential artist in Paris. Succeeding
generations of painters persisted in paying homage to his achievements and in exploring his aesthetic
theories. Paul Cézanne famously observed, “We all paint in Delacroix’s language.” This talk will
illuminate how and why this was so.
Patrick Noon is Elizabeth MacMillan Chair of Paintings at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and curator of
the exhibition “Delacroix’s Influence: The Rise of Modern Art from Cézanne to van Gogh.”
