Research

I perform research in SAXS/WAXS materials science; relating macroscopic material parameters to molecular structures, conformations and orientations. Most recently this has included studies of selective solvency of diblock copolymers in potential energy and data storage systems.58,59 Other specific work has included original experimental verification of theories proposed for deformation mechanisms inducing molecular structural changes in polymeric blends,1,31,52,54 melts,2,17,22,48 gels,46,53,56 elastomers32,34,37,39,40,43 and liquid crystalline systems,3-5,8,9 and comprehensive characterization of self assembling systems:57 some targeted for use in state of the art electronics,38,44.49 some as drug delivery systems.23,24,35,41,42 These latter have included study of the relevance of the branching architecture on the molecular radial density distribution,26-28,33,45 and the effect of mechanical and thermal deformation on micellar packing.7,10-16,18-21,25 A novel organic study investigated the defect of the genetic dentinogenesis in teeth, relating the defect to the maturation processes of the mineral growing between the collagen fibers.29,30,50

These experiments have been performed at synchrotrons in the UK, France, Germany and the US, and neutron sources in the UK, Denmark and the US. I have designed in-situ sample environment systems: including a shearing device for polymeric and surfactant solutions and gels with simultaneous scattering analysis,16,19 and an integrated system which simultaneously controls streaming images from a CCD based x-ray detector synchronized with the sample's temperature, deformation condition and position within the probe beam.6
