About this Item
First Edition (SD). Once listed, this will be the Only copy of the book for sale on the Internet. And, happily, both the book and the dust jacket are in excellent condition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. I don't see any soiling at all. The cover edges look terrific. So do the corners. The page edges are exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. There is a very light vertical crease on the spine. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are a textured gray. They are perfectly clean and free of wear. That fairly describes all the pages in the book. Scrolling through, I'm not discovering any soiling at all. The pages are nicely bright. I'm not seeing any creasing of any kind. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There are a handful of photographs. They are all in excellent condition. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It appears to be perfectly clean. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. I don't see any wear. The flaps do not have any print on them. Nor do they have any wear. They're perfectly clean as well. The photograph on the title page shows President Kemeny addressing the Dartmouth community on his experience chairing the Commission appointed by The President of the United States to investigate the March 1979 nuclear accident at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania. As noted, John Kemeny was the President of Dartmouth College from 1970 to 1981. 'He presided over the coeducation of Dartmouth in 1972. He also instituted the 'Dartmouth Plan' of year-round operations, thereby allowing more students without more buildings. During his administration, Dartmouth became more proactive in recruiting and retaining minority students and revived its founding commitment to provide education for American Indians. Kemeny made Dartmouth a pioneer in student use of computers, equating computer literacy with reading literacy. In 1982 he returned to teaching full-time. He was a mathematician and a computer scientist as well as an educator. He was well known for co-developing the BASIC programming language with Thomas E Kurtz and Mary Kenneth Keller. Kemeny and Kurtz were pioneers in the use of computers for ordinary people. Stephen J. Nelson authored a book in 2019 titled John G. Kemeny and Dartmouth College: The Man, the Times, and the College Presidency. Seller Inventory # 004927
