Lauren Conrad has changed a lot over the years. She went from pining over Stephen Colletti on Laguna Beach to becoming a lifestyle guru, which is what we call moving up in the world. But one thing has always remained constant: her flawless, sleek hair. Now her go-to stylist, Kristin Ess, has spilled the secrets to Conrad's hair perfection.

Ess posted a video on her Instagram demonstrating how she styles and brushes through Conrad's (supershiny!) blonde hair to create the soft waves she's become known for:

Buckle up, because the steps are extensive and take some time. The first thing Ess does is spray a leave-in conditioner all over Conrad's damp hair. Ess's conditioner of choice is Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave in Conditioner. "This is my trick for extra shine from the inside out," she wrote in the caption. Next, while Conrad's hair is still damp, Ess sprays Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray all over Conrad's hair.

Now it's time for drying. "Blow-dry with the nozzle on and the dryer pointed to the ground to push the cuticle downward," wrote Ess in the caption. "Use cold air at the end once it's dry." Then Ess pulls out her Hot Tools Professional Jumbo 1 Inch Curling Iron and curls medium-size sections toward Conrad's face. According to Ess, it's really important that all the strands go in the same direction, so don't lose sight of which way you're directing your iron.

The next step is to spray on a "light, shine-enhancing brushable hair spray," like Ess's favorite, Oribe Superfine Hair Spray, all over. You need to wait for that to set (Ess suggests doing your makeup in the interim), then brush (Ess relies on the Laight and Mercer Hairbrush for Dry Hair). And when we say brush, we mean really brush. Ess brushes Conrad's hair from the roots to the ends repeatedly until she "sees a pattern develop." She says that sometimes it takes her two minutes and sometimes it takes her 20 minutes. "All the sudden the pattern appears like magic," writes Ess. Just thinking of how much pain our hands would be in after brushing our hair for 20 minutes makes us wince, but hey, anything for Conrad's beautiful soft waves, right?
