    Morty Manus is president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. When Morty joined the company, he had recently received a business degree from City College of New York. As a clarinetist and pianist, he saw the need for quality music education publications. Drawing upon his musical experiences, Morty oversaw the development of instructional publications for accordion, guitar, piano, and drums; performance music for band, orchestra, chorus, and music theory.

    Morty is the author and editor of numerous Alfred titles, including Alfred’s Basic Guitar Course, Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Alfred’s Adult Piano Course, and Essentials of Music Theory. In 2008, he received an honorary doctorate degree in music from the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago for “having made a significant contribution to the music education profession as evidenced by his outstanding creative achievements, scholarship and leadership.”

    Morty met his wife Iris when she was working for Alfred on Saturdays. Iris has worked on a full-time basis for Alfred since the late 1960s, and maintains the position of executive producer.

The book is a classic, of course, but it looks like the publisher hired some new (or tired) people. Cover to a book on Bible included, partially upside down, several pages doubled, as per last picture.This by no means affects the contents and it’s kinda funny. I’m not returning. Buy it, even with the Bible Study cover. ;)(I just hope I’m not paying for a knock off copy. Authors should get royalties.)

Coming from someone who eased their way through the first book, I'll tell you that you should complete that one before doing this one if you are new to the piano like I was a few months back. But if you have some experience behind the piano and have been playing for a little while, you can pick up right here. It picks up right where book 1 left off at and continues. It has some great pieces in here that are easy to understand, but at the same time challenge you at some points that is saying that you are an intermediate like me. And most importantly, it does a good job instructing you on how to play through out the book. When I first started in book 1, I needed a teacher to help guide me but after 50 pages or so I was very capable of handling it on my own the rest of the way and that continues in book 2 so yes, you can sort of guide yourself throughout the journey.

See my review of the Level One book. This series of adult books is excellent and is very reasonably priced. I can't say enough good about the books. Some folks complain that the music used in these texts is not classical. Well, for me, classical music was what drove me away from the piano in the first place when I was a young kid. I wanted to learn to play the popular music I was hearing on the radio. Now as a senior I can chose my own music: classical, popular, rock, jazz, spiritual, and more. I'm learning to play the piano and that is a huge thrill for me. Evenings I study the book, figure out the count and mark the drill and practice pieces with it, and make notations on the music where I feel the need, then the next afternoon, I sit down at the piano and practice. It feels wonderfully gratifying to make music myself again.

Will teach you the basics. Progresses slower then the Alfred books, but both will likely work well. As I’m fond of staying, I personally don’t believe any of these books can replace a good piano teacher. There are just to many subtleties that a book can’t teach. If you don’t have access or are unable to afford a teacher then this is the next best thing. Most want to know if this or the Alfred books are better, but it depends on your learning style. I believe this series is a bit less frustrating and moves slower which may be good due to the potential frustration of learning to play an instrument that requires a fair amount of multitasking.

I am nearing the end of Alfred's All-in-one Book 1, so have only browsed this book. But, I can comment on what I like about the methodology and the books:

1. The progression of theory, exercises, and performance materials is very well thought out. When Palmer says this exercise should be practiced daily, do it. It really helps improve your technical skills.

2. The quality of the construction is high - big easy to read notes and spiral bound so the book lays flat on the piano music stand.

3. The songs are interesting and varied, introducing different genres of music.

The only slight drawback is there is ample opportunity to improvise on a number of the songs and try your hand at composing, but Palmer does not point this out. It is definitely worth doing, really reinforcing a thorough understanding of chords, keys, chord inversions, and other concepts introduced in the text.

It has a great content, suitable for begginers but throughout the book, I feel like I get stuck very easily as I flip the pages. Don't get me wrong, the lessons have a smooth progress but the execution are a disaster when first sight-reading. It takes many weeks and months for me to become fluent in a certain piece. It's possible to become fluent on the songs from these books and many others outside of them. It all depends on each ones' individual determination, gift or abilities. I don't play the piano everyday, unfortunately and don't have a steady timeline for practicing. That's the reason also for the struggle.
But anyway, this book is excellent, just like all the others from the series and from this author.
