Collected Stories of William Faulkner Paperback – October 31, 1995
Purchase options and add-ons
“I’m a failed poet. Maybe every novelist wants to write poetry first, finds he can’t and then tries the short story which is the most demanding form after poetry. And failing that, only then does he take up novel writing.” —William Faulkner
Winner of the National Book Award
Forty-two stories make up this magisterial collection by the writer who stands at the pinnacle of modern American fiction. Compressing an epic expanse of vision into hard and wounding narratives, Faulkner’s stories evoke the intimate textures of place, the deep strata of history and legend, and all the fear, brutality, and tenderness of the human condition. These tales are set not only in Yoknapatawpha County, but in Beverly Hills and in France during World War I. They are populated by such characters as the Faulknerian archetypes Flem Snopes and Quentin Compson, as well as by ordinary men and women who emerge so sharply and indelibly in these pages that they dwarf the protagonists of most novels.

Review
“For all his concern with the South, Faulkner was actually seeking out the nature of man. Thus we must turn to him for that continuity of moral purpose which made for greatness of our classics.” —Ralph Ellison

Born in 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi, William Faulkner was the son of a family proud of their prominent role in the history of the south. He grew up in Oxford, Mississippi, and left high school at fifteen to work in his grandfather's bank.
Rejected by the US military in 1915, he joined the Canadian flyers with the RAF, but was still in training when the war ended. Returning home, he studied at the University of Mississippi and visited Europe briefly in 1925.
His first poem was published in The New Republic in 1919. His first book of verse and early novels followed, but his major work began with the publication of The Sound and the Fury in 1929. As I Lay Dying (1930), Sanctuary (1931), Light in August (1932), Absalom, Absalom! (1936) and The Wild Palms (1939) are the key works of his great creative period leading up to Intruder in the Dust (1948). During the 1930s, he worked in Hollywood on film scripts, notably The Blue Lamp, co-written with Raymond Chandler.
William Faulkner was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949 and the Pulitzer Prize for The Reivers just before his death in July 1962.

When his Nobel Prize was announced in '49 he was described as a 'Mississippi farmer.' This makes his crops far more available.
This is a great to have on Kindle. I had owned the print version at one time but the electronic version is very convenient for short stories. It helps that the Kindle version includes page numbers and, a dynamic table of contents. Very nicely put together.
The stories are, for the most part, fantastic. Barn Burning and A Rose for Emily are stories I've read dozens of times and still enjoy. Bear Hunt is superb, told by Ratliff after an introduction by an unnamed narrator. This story in particular has stuck with me as it is both humorous and poignant. It's also one that lends itself to retelling as I did just the other day.
Very much worth having this on Kindle.
Every section has good stories in them and some better than other. Reading Faulkner ain't no walk in the park though. In the Beyond section of the book the stories are a little more difficult to read and understand. That section alone is the reason I gave the book four stars and not five. Carcassonne may be poetic and beautiful to some but it's...I don't know read it for yourself. Faulkner kind of puts you in your place and says, "I know poetry, you know nothing". I'll keep reading until I do understand though.
I've been reading Faulkner's works for about 5 months straight and I think this collection of stories is what I should have started with first. I hope that if you decide to take on Faulkner to start here and save The Sound and the Fury for later...but not too much later.
Enjoy.
However, I originally purchased this book in April 2011, but found the printing rather smudged and many of the words were lighter than the rest of the text. I am ordering another copy of the paperback edition with hopes that the problem has been resolved. I'll report back.
Faulkner creates memorable characters and paints vivid scenes to stage their actions but then has them do inexplicable things to no avail. There are good reasons that the author was not able to make a living with his stories before winning the Nobel Prize in 1949. He had the support of fellow writers of esoterica in winning that award. The publicity sold his novels and short stories and made him successful. He was a literary giant but his work is of variable quality. Some of the best and a lot of the worst is included in this collection.
My comments will be sacrilege to the eyes of his many ardent admirers.
