When the NUMA crew is exposed to a dangerous toxin, Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala will stop at nothing to find a cure foretold by Ancient Egyptian lore in this exhilarting novel from the #1 New York Times–bestselling series

Head of NUMA special assignments, Kurt Austin and his most trusted friend, Joe Zavala tangle with a ruthless powerbroker scheming to build a new Egyptian empire as glorious as those of the Pharaohs. Part of their adversary's plan rests on the manipulation of a newly discovered aquifer beneath the Sahara, but an even more devastating weapon at his disposal may threaten the entire world: a plant extract known as the black mist, discovered in the City of the Dead and rumored to have the power to take life from the living and restore it to the dead.

With the balance of power in Africa and Europe on the verge of tipping, Kurt, Joe, and the rest of the NUMA team will have to fight to discover the truth behind the legends—but to do that, they have to confront in person the greatest legend of them all: Osiris, the ruler of the Egyptian underworld.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In bestseller Cussler's 13th NUMA Files novel (after 2014's Ghost Ship, also coauthored with Brown), it's business as usual for Kurt Austin of the National Underwater and Marine Agency as he and his cohorts battle modern-day mad men armed with an ancient deadly weapon. Kurt and partner Joe Zavala are diving for relics in the Mediterranean when they respond to a distress call from a nearby island, where they find hundreds of people who have been put into a state of suspended animation after inhaling an ancient Egyptian substance called the Black Mist. The man controlling the mist, Tariq Shakir, a former member of the Egyptian secret police, has built an organization, Osiris, whose goal is to conquer all of North Africa. Shakir is also draining an aquifer deep beneath the Sahara, which will bring Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya under his control. Toss in vast underground chambers, pits of voracious alligators, Napoleon's foray into Egypt, mummified bullfrogs, and you could be anywhere in any number of other Cussler novels. But no matter the recycling of the same old stuff; Cussler fans will be perfectly happy. Agent: Peter Lampack, Peter Lampack Agency. (Nov.)\n

“Cussler’s action-packed, fun-filled 11th NUMA Files adventure provides a deserted volcanic-island lair, tricked-out ships, diving exploits, and plenty of thugs and minions to give Kurt Austin a few problems, to say nothing of a beautiful woman scientist”

Action, suspense, an unusual plot that has Austin and Zavala saving and discovering as usual. Cussler and Brown 2nd to none!

More enjoyable NUMA files action to be had here. I won't worry about going into the plot except to say it's the usual over the top adventure fare that I've come to love from Cussler. If you're considering reading book 13 of a series then it's a safe bet you know what's coming and you'll enjoy it.

The highlight for me was a brief but fun crossover with the Oregon series. I was surprised when I first read The Emperor's Revenge (book 12 of the Oregon Files) and saw Kurt Austin show up to help out Juan. Here it's finally nice to read the other side and see what brought Austin and Zavala into the Chairman's vicinity. It's a fun exchange and its a shame it doesn't go longer. I enjoy NUMA and the Oregon, but I'm the first to admit both series' have become a little stagnant of late - maybe a full blown crossover series is the ticket to rejuvenate them? I'd certainly put money down to read it

Kurt Austin and his sidekick Joe Zavala become involved in their greatest adventure yet in "The Pharaoh's Secret". While Kurt and Joe are working in the Mediterranean, a strange mist engulfs the island of Lampedusa. The people on the island, including some of Kurt and Joe's NUMA crew, fall into a death-like sleep. Known as the Black Mist, this mysterious toxin has the power to incapacitate any who come in contact with it.

Unfortunately for Kurt and Joe, a powerful man known as Tariq Shakir and his company, Osiris, are in possession of the Black Mist. Obsessed with control of not just North Africa, but Europe as well, Shakir has begun siphoning water from the countries in North Africa, threatening to kill millions of people along the way. Shakir's goal is to create governments sympathetic to him and he's using the Black Mist along with destroying the water supply to further his goals.

Upon learning of the Lampedusa episode, Kurt, Joe and Renata Ambrosini, a female doctor from the island, begin to search for the clues to the antidote of the Black Mist. The search will take them from the Middle East to Europe, and the information they find will date back to the time of the Pharaohs and Napoleon. Will they find the antidote before it's too late?

I'm a big fan of Cussler's various series, and Kurt Austin is one of my favorites. "The Pharaoh's Secret" carries on Cussler's tradition of writing exciting adventure stories with interesting, believable characters and loads of fast-paced action. Highly recommended.

This was a really thrilling ride which, for the first time, included characters from three of Cussler's series: Austin and Zavala from the Numa Files; Paul & Gamay Trout; and Juan Cabrillo and associates from the Oregon Files series. It was a perfect blending of the skills of each of them against some really nasty villains, out to rule the world as usual. But of course Cussler's Heroes, along with a pretty lady with considerable skills herself, is able to throw a monkey wrench into the bad guy's plans. In the end, the resourceful trio of teams is able to overcome almost insurmountable odds and reverse the damage done by the bad guys. Cussler always writes an excellent epilogue that neatly ties together all the loose ends, and leaves the reader breathless but very satisfied that the good guys won again. Excellent read!

Cliver Cussler is a fun mystery writer who takes a date in history, brings it to possibly the last century or sooner and then to the present day. Many of his twists and turns are plausible, which make them intriguing. I personally think that this was not one of his more exciting stories and seemed like an adaptation from other books. But hey, you can't expect every author to be spot on with all of their books. It is still an interesting, though not as plausible theme in contemporary scientific terms. Kirk Austen and his sidekick Joe Zavala are always inventive and fun characters who often overlap with others in Cussler's books. It is still a good read so don't hesitate to buy it. If you are a die hard follower of Clive Cussler you too may find some aspects of other tales. But it's relaxing to read and has no bullying politicians making a pitch!!

This is an adventure story, as all Clive Cussler books are meant to be. Having read his early books back in the 70's, it's nice to see the stories are less sexist with meaningful participation by females. Cussler (and his co-writers) always manage to combine history (in this case, ancient Egypt) and adventure. Fun reading for junior high and up.

As per usual Clive Cussler books, brilliant, not had a bad one, all keep you reading more very difficult to put down. A lot of books takes half book to get into them, but Cussler books one chapter get you hooked, other books , close down after two chapters, never had one of his books did not finish. Enjoyed them all and can read again and again, let’s hope if someone takes over his titles can keep that up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, fun read, with a decent plot. Another good book in the NUMA series.
Reviewed in Canada on December 2, 2015
Some have accused Cussler and his coauthors of churning out books for commercial reasons. Perhaps so, but as long as the quality remains solid and the books are fun and interesting to read, who cares? The last few Cussler books have all been solid reads for me, and I would not complain if he managed to double his output!

This novel is a NUMA series, and deals with a plan to control water supplies in the Middle East along with a mysterious nerve toxin that kills...sort of. Character developments isn't really a strong point in this book, but it doesn't really matter. The story is interesting (not too far-fetched) and the action is continuous. It's an engrossing read throughout, and I enjoyed reading chapter-by-chapter, always drawn in quickly. In the end, that's what I want from a book like this: keep me entertained and wanting more, and that's all that matters.
