"WHAT CAN I CONFESS? I'M ASHLAR. I'M A TALTOS.
It's centuries since I've seen one single other member of my own species. Oh, there have been others. I've heard of them, chased after them, and in some instances almost found them. Mark, I say almost. But not in centuries have I touched my own flesh and blood, as humans are so fond of saying. Never in all this time....[pg. 64]
When Ashlar learns that another Taltos has been seen, he is suddenly propelled into the haunting world of the Mayfair family, the New Orleans dynasty of witches forever besieged by ghosts, spirits, and their own dizzying powers. For Ashlar knows this powerful clan is intimately linked to the heritage of the Taltos.
In a swirling universe filled with death and life, corruption and innocence, this mesmerizing novel takes us on a wondrous journey back through the centuries to a civilization half-human, of wholly mysterious origin, at odds with mortality and immortality, justice and guilt. Anne Rice was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, which provided the backdrop for many of her famous novels. She was the author of more than 30 books, including her first novel, Interview with the Vampire, which was published in 1976. It has since gone on to become one of the best-selling novels of all time, and was adapted into a major motion picture starring Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Kirsten Dunst, and Antonio Banderas. In addition to The Vampire Chronicles, Anne was the author of several other best-selling supernatural series including Mayfair Witches, Queen of the Damned, the Wolf Gift, and Ramses the Damned. Under the pen name A.N. Roquelaure, Anne was the author of the erotic (BDSM) fantasy series, The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy. Under the pen name Anne Rampling she was the author of two erotic novels, Exit to Eden and Belinda. A groundbreaking artist whose work was widely beloved in popular culture, Anne had this to say of her work: "I have always written about outsiders, about outcasts, about those whom others tend to shun or persecute. And it does seem that I write a lot about their interaction with others like them and their struggle to find some community of their own. The supernatural novel is my favorite way of talking about my reality. I see vampires and witches and ghosts as metaphors for the outsider in each of us, the predator in each of us...the lonely one who must grapple day in and day out with cosmic uncertainty."

Taltos, Lives of the Mayfair Witches, was an absolutely wonderful read! Anne Rice is a great storyteller and in her final installment of the Mayfair Witches, she concluded a fantastic adventure. When you read a book that is exactly what is to happen. You are to be part of the story - have an adventure.

I read and loved all 3 books in succession and the ending of this one was wonderful. In all of her books, some reviewers were harsh on Ms. Rice. But perhaps these particular people are under the impression that it is just as easy to write a book as it is to READ one. They should try it sometime. It's not easy at all. But Anne Rice makes it look easy.

Her carefully chosen words read like poetry in some places and that draws a reader into the rest of her novels. I am a fan of long novels which is why I loved reading these ones so much. I was taken to New Orleans, Scotland, and New York to name only a few places. What could be wrong with that? I had fun reading these books and was drawn into the storyline from the first page of the first part of these books.

I really loved Ash! His character was so loving and so ethereal, that I wanted to meet him! Imagine that! Wanting to meet a character in a novel! The books were great reading material and I highly recommend all three of these to anyone who loves good writing. Anne Rice never shies away from heavy topics like rape, abortion, incest (I had a difficult time typing them down right now!) Her style of writing is spot on and the characters she invents are people on pages. They have traits of their own and that is easily discernible to anyone reading her novels.

Yay, finally some closure. Ashlar gets his girl. Only now, I would love to have seen this series grow. It was an enjoyable read. The first few books were ok but this one was the best. Glad I read the series. I wonder if Michael and Mona made any more Taltos? LOL

Answers a lot of lingering questions and opens but doesn't answer new ones. The end was ok but a bit un-satisfying. Still, it's a worthy read.

This was my second reading of The Mayfair Witches. Phenomenal. I chose to read it again because of the AMC series. Much is lost in the series. Read the book for an astounding journey.

Very good book! I felt that it did leave a few threads unfinished. Haven't read Blackwod Farm or Blood Canticle yet, and I hope the loose ends will tie up there. You feel as if you are in the story with the characters. Rowan remains the cold aloof personality she has always been, but I can at least feel some sympathy for Lasher after reading this book. I absolutely loved the character of Yuri. He is so adorable and tragic. And of course Ashlar is very seductive as expected. I think bringing him into the tale really helped fans to have a better understanding of Lasher and his behavior. As Ashlar tells his tale, much of what seemed bewildering about Lasher is suddenly quite understandable. I think the way she ended the book was hauntingly beautiful. Some previews of this book describe it as being "out of steam" or otherwise not as good as the other books. If you skim read then it might seem that way to you, but if you take the time with this book and really understand what Anne is trying to say to you, I think you will find it just as alluring as all the others.

Taltos takes the Mayfair Witch story on a tangent that is not so much a wrapping up of the trilogy as it is taking a different direction. The book is mostly about the Taltos and their history. A new character is introduced, an ancient Taltos named Ashlar. He is drawn to the Mayfair witches and the possibilities they represent. The corruption of the Talamasca takes up a good part of the plot - an unnecessary and annoying plot device over the last two novels that just further obfuscates things and doesn't add anything to the story that couldn't have been brought around more naturally. The Mayfair characters are pushed to the periphery of their own story. Rowan and Michael do very little in this book besides be around when other things are happening or other stories are being told. Mona is given a lot to do but her character is quite different from book 2. She has gone from cute little beribboned girl in book 1, to precocious teenage femme fatale in book 2, to helpless victim of circumstance in book 3. A new Mayfair named Mary Jane comes out of the swamp and takes on the role that Mona had in the previous novel of precocious teenage vamp. Morrigan is another new character, and is really just awful, and not in a compelling way.

Anne Rice is a good writer, and Ashlar's long exposition of the Taltos history is the best part of this book (though not equal to the Mayfair saga of the first novel), but the bringing about of this seems clumsy and out of nowhere. Like, it literally goes like, "Hi, I am a rich Taltos named Ashlar who has been around since time began and now I will tell you my story Rowan and Michael! Also I will solve the Talamasca problem because I am a nice guy! You'll let me know if you ever run across a female Taltos won't you?" Ashlar owns an internationally known company that makes famous "Ashlar" branded toys but no one in previous books ever said anything like, "Oh Ashlar, like the dolls!" when they learned Lasher's real name. Oh well. Just gives the impression that the trilogy evolved due to the success of the original novel but was not following a master plan. There is also a lot of laziness and indulgence in this book. You get the feeling reading it that Anne Rice really likes Claridge's of London and has started a hobby of collecting dolls and puts these characteristics onto her characters.

The book ends on a cliffhanger, but by the time it ends I didn't really care anymore if the Taltos take over the world. Doesn't seem likely. I know these characters come up again in future novels where the vampires and witches and Taltos join stories. I read one of these books and it was written almost like this book didn't happen - Mona is desperately ill due to childbirth and is an enemy of Rowan's. None of this was set up in this novel at all, in fact it seems like it was the opposite. Anyways, I guess Anne Rice has reached a place where she can write what she wants and people will buy it but it doesn't make for great reading always.

It was as good now as when it was published. She takes me home to New Orleans. The sounds, the scents, the heat. You have to read all 3, but this one is so full of hope and promise. I wish she was alive to write another one. I will not watch the tv series. I already know that they've messed up too many details. Read the books!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5* stars for the seller, grudgingly 3* star for Taltos the book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 9, 2023
Firstly, the product was delivered as sold in great condition and was well packaged with fast delivery, hence the 5 star rating.

But, the actual story Taltos was a grudgingly 3 stars, (after recomendation from an older relative to read The Mayfair Witches) i read the witching hour (book 1) which I loved and had to see what happened next, read Lasher (book 2) kind of started to go off track and not quite a reflection of the witching hour but I continued on to Taltos (book 3) and the story went off on a weird tangent hardly a glimmer of the witching hour feel, actually I struggled to engage with it and lost interest, it’s sitting half read on the bedside cabinet, i wish i had just left the story at Lasher. Look forward to reading more from the author but this one, i’ve got to say, was not her best.

The writing of Anne Rice is good, however the quality of the book itself is beyond poor. Very thin paper, small print, and print is too close to the inwards margin. Takes away from the joy of reading. Book needed to be bigger (at least 20%) and the pages better aligned to the seam.
