Overview

"Agnello by Agnello: Striking the Heart of an Artist's Confessions" is the artist's self-revelation, a reconciliation of a life that has played out with both middle-class predictability and deviant audacity. Characterized and illuminated through his own words, Agnello's art is cutting-edge, a stage for a world caught in dysfunction, not the least of which finds his own biographical heartaches, regrets, and insecurities. In the end, the story holds its head up high: a triumph of an outspoken mind, lifting the curtain to life's conflicts, emptiness, and disappointments, but also speaking of great heights, accomplishments, and resolutions. Art with nerve, art for people's sake, not for bland decoration, is at once Agnello's high command, transcending emotional struggle to robust drama. Some 285 illustrations of paintings and drawings, grouped through the artist's own correlation of themes and aesthetic trends, enrich the narrative

About the Author

Kenneth Agnello is an active exhibiting artist, now author, whose artistic output overlaps five decades. An American baby-boomer, Agnello's artistic drive owes much to the great rock music stars of the 1960's and 1970's, as it does to the core of artists he has studied and admired, their collective influence assisting in shaping the special quality that defines his own brand of expressive content. He earned a B.A. degree in Art History from Seton Hall University in 1977 and a M. A. degree in Fine Arts from Montclair State College (now University) in 1981, and has been exhibiting in the greater New York area ever since. His intense paintings and drawings are rooted in the Expressionist tradition, but their visual power reaches beyond the constrained parameters connoted by any art historical categorization. Progressing through his own private experiences, Agnello’s work communicates a language which at the same time is both cutting-edge and sensitive, waging a stance for humanity against the perils of personal loss, destruction, and emotional defeat. His art resonates with a lifelong response to the human condition, and compromises none of the drama for a preference for decorative niceties.
