Emily Deschanel knows the risk.

As Fox’s “Bones” heads toward its fourth season finale May 14, big changes are in store for the show’s central duo.

Tonight (at 8 on WFXT, Ch. 25), Dr. Temperance Brennan (Deschanel) asks FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) to father her child.

Next week, after seasons of suggestive banter and missed opportunities, the pair finally end up together in bed.

“I don’t think that we should have waited too much longer than this to have something happen,” Deschanel said in a conference call with reporters last week.

“The concern is always that it will dissipate the romantic tension between the characters. And you know, a lot of shows have died from that, so I think it was a matter of timing and figuring out the right way to do it so that it doesn’t ruin everything for the show. I think (executive producer Hart Hanson) was really careful about putting us together. I’m happy about the way it turned out, and we’ll see how the audience feels, I guess.”

The sensible Dr. Brennan had previously declared she never wanted to have children. Deschanel loves that her character now wants something different.

“In real life, people do change and surprise you, and whether you like it or not, they change direction in their lives sometimes. And they have contradictions . . . and you’ll see there are some twists and turns in that episode that will surprise everyone.”

Fox has bounced “Bones” around the schedule this season, moving it from Wednesday to Thursday and sometimes airing it Mondays or not at all. Deschanel said even her grandparents didn’t know when the show would air.

“I think it says a lot about our fans and viewers who follow us from night to night, even in the same week. We’re just so grateful for such loyal fans. If we didn’t have them, we would never have survived because we’ve been moved around so many times.”

In addition to Brennan’s life-changing decision, tonight’s episode features a guest appearance from Stewie (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) of the animated series “Family Guy.”

“Booth will hallucinate seeing Stewie after hearing Brennan’s request. I thought it was such a brilliant crossover kind of episode,” she said. “The script was so funny and moving, and it kind of has emotion and drama. I thought it was really clever of the writers to think of that and really think outside the box. But it’s done in a very, for lack of a better word, realistic way, and I think it plays in the world of our show. We have kind of a goofy, crazy side.”
