After sitting out Toy Story 3, Bo Peep is back in the upcoming fourth movie and there have been some major changes.
Talking to Digital Spy, Toy Story 4 producer Jonas Rivera revealed that when the decision came to bring Bo Peep back, they looked back on the first two movies and found a surprising detail about her scenes.
"We looked at the first two films, there's not even a close-up of her. She's always on the shelves, a little bit of a look-out," he explained.
"What we used her in [Toy Story 3] was to show there's dramatic stakes. As much as Woody is good at his job, they're not all together, they didn't all make it. Toys do go, they get lost or broken or donated, so the opportunity narratively was to show what happened.
"More importantly, emotionally to show how she's impacted by that and who she is now and then ultimately how that impacts Woody."
Rivera added that there was an element of Bo Peep being a "great surprise" when she returned to the Toy Story world.
"Wouldn't it be cool if you think you know everything about Toy Story and you go and see this movie, and then you see a character who you remember, but she's the smartest character and you weren't even looking at her?" he outlined.
"You go, 'Maybe I should have been watching her more, I didn't see her coming'. We just wanted to do it in a way that was authentic and true, not goofy or trope-y or a misstep.
"So many people were passionate on the crew to make sure that if we were going to do this, we wanted her to be as real, as human and as sophisticated as Woody was, even more so because we want her to influence Woody."
Toy Story 4 is released in cinemas on June 21.
