About this product

Product Information

ROMA, the Federico Fellini-directed benchmark of the Italian New Wave, explores the city of Rome from several different perspectives, giving it a mystical life of its own that hangs in the balance between its rich history and its modern identity. With no real chronology, ROMA is a tapestry of bizarre scenes and familiar images (Fellini peppers the film with easily identifiable references to his earlier works) that blend together into a gorgeous visual carnival. Typical of Fellini, with the carnival comes a critique--and ROMA tears through the city's political and religious history, satirizing the Catholic church and various faces of Italian government from Renaissance times through Mussolini's reign and on into the 1960s. While the camera lavishes affectionately over Rome's art and architecture and is clearly a tribute to the Eternal City, most of the sets in the film are constructed, reinforcing Fellini's narrative imagination and keeping viewers caught in a perpetual contradiction between reality and fantasy, history and the present, fact and fiction.

  • thoroughly enjoyed this movie again after 20+ years

I love Fellini films, Amarcord still my favorite vignette on Italian life. Having lived in Europe for 16 years, these movies are a fun visit without the plane fare. Roma was more of an update for that film. Will probably purchase 8 1/2, La Dolce Vita, and El e nave va. Not all Fellini films are hits, his earliest ones are probable his best, for my tastes. But if you like European films, you'll enjoy Fellini. Have to love some of his characters, little known actors with stand-out phyical traits. enough said.

  • Not many people are qualified to review a Fellini movie. I'm not one of them.

It would help to first read about twenty books on WW2, Mussolini, the Italian character as depicted by Italian Italians, not Hollywood Italians, and to remember that the Italians depicted in Fellin's Roma are possibly vignettes of the director's childhood remembrances, wonderfully presented. I completely accept that absolutely no one has the slightest interest in my opinion of the film. They only want to think that their opinions are read by the whole world.

  • Be ready to ROFL!

Sexist, raunchy, hilarious, trippy throughout, dead serious at times and oh so Italian! You may not be able to watch this with your GF unless she is a liberated soul, in which case, lucky you! Some will find Roma offensive on many levels, especially if you are an old school devout Catholic. Please consider that this is a product of the early 70s and of course, it's pure Fellini!
