The Carl Palmer Band - Carl Palmer Band In Concert
First off, I downloaded a version off the internet. After watching it, I was very impressed of what I saw and heard. Therefore I bought the commercial version to obtain all the features (chapters etc) of a true DVD. I am a music video collector. I followed ELP since their early days, and collected mostly all of their Music DVD videos. Now, Carl Palmer has done what the others did, create a band of his own. My impressions are as follows: simple stage setup, no fancy laser shows or whatsoever gimmickry, borderline garage band with too much lighting at times. The musicians, a guitarist and a 6 string bass player. At times I almost feel that the two musicians have recruited Carl as their drummer or is it vice versa ? The guitarist and the bass player seems to be best buddies for ever; they share a chemistry between them like no one. Usually musicians follows a certain rule and do their performance, but them its like a "I'll show you how I am made of" ... I personally feel that the bass player has to be one of the most impressive one of all. Stanley Clarke, you have a new kid on the block brother ! This guy plays his bass way better than Dreamtheater's bassist. The DVD is well layout, no long and boring warnings and flying logos as intros, it starts right off the bat with the song list (~20 songs), then get ready for a ride... the two acoustic musicians renders quite a performance. The young guitarist shows promising signs to be as good as John Pettruci (Dreamtheater's guitarist) if not there already, the bassist playing a 6 string bass guitar show no signs of struggle as he plucks away on his bass like if he was born with it. It's is somewhat ackward to distinguish from Keith Emerson's complex chords and this interpretation rendered on guitar. Quite impressive ! Its also weird to see a Carl Palmer talking to the audience in between each songs as we also used to see him behind his drums. It is interesting to see this refreshing attempt to continue the legacy Carl has so long ventured in. After watching it a couple of times, it made me wonder if things could had been done differently in the sense of visuals. Like I said, it looks like a bunch of High School virtuosos where Carl Palmer paid them a visit to support promising local musicians on a High School stage. The quality of recording is OK, however the mix could had been done better. Lack of hearing cymbals at times, the recording sounds like a decent garage band recording. What made me buy the DVD is the impressive talent these two young musicians has and obviously our star Carl, playing with two very talented musicians. Where my jaw dropped is when these guys start to go overboard i.e. guitar solo, the bass solo... whooooooooo! Image quality is OK, don't expect HD recording, but nice camera sky pans, side shots and close ups at times. Well produced, a must have DVD for collectors especially those who are fans of ELP. I couldn't believe the gulls these guys when they played Toccata (From Brain Salad Surgery Album). No regrets of having buying it, will watch it over and over to demonstrate where the future of promising musicians is heading. Very innovative. 7 of 10 Cheers !
