Old Town Catania

Catania
Angera showing a small town or village and a river or creek
Baroque architecture and elegant piazzas decorate the historic core of a city framed by Mount Etna and filled with exciting attractions to suit varied interests.

Old Town Catania is a heritage-listed, walkable area with art galleries, museums and plenty of atmospheric spots for delicious pasta and people-watching. Stroll from historical sites such as Ursino Castle to bustling markets and theater shows while you’re exploring.

Piazza del Duomo is the central square, showcasing the best of the old town’s baroque architecture. Step past the marble façade of Catania Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Agatha. It holds the tomb of Catanian opera composer Vincenzo Bellini. Nearby, visit the Diocesano Museum.

Gaze at the ornate Palace of the Seminary of the Clerics, Elephant Palace and the Elephant Fountain in the center of the piazza. Photograph the white Carrara marble Amenano Fountain. From here, it’s just steps to the Catania Fish Market via the Porta Uzeda arch. The market is one of Italy’s largest and it’s open on weekday mornings following ancient tradition. Buy everything from sardines to clams and mussels and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Museum and gallery hopping are among the top things to do in Catania. Explore the Bellini Civic Museum to learn about the life of Sicily’s famous composer, Vincenzo Bellini. At Giovanni Verga’s House Museum, see where the writer grew up. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Sicily showcases glass-blown sculptures and avant-garde paintings.

Discover the remnants of the ancient Catania Roman Amphitheater and book tickets to a modern performance at one of the city’s venues. See opera at the Massimo Bellini Theatre at Piazza Vincenzo Bellini. The Metropolitan Theater features comedy, dance and drama. After a performance in the area, you’ll find many restaurants for Catania’s signature dish, pasta alla Norma, and arancini, stuffed rice balls.

You won’t need transport other than your own feet while exploring Old Town Catania, as attractions and hotels are within easy walking distance. Fly to Catania International Airport or arrive by ferry at Catania Port. Public transportation is readily available to reach the old town.
