Feeler Gauge
A feeler gauge is made up of a series of steel plates or blades which have a progression of very precisely calibrated thicknesses often joined at one end with a pin or rivet and which fold back like a fan into a handle. Each blade is marked with its thickness. A feeler gauge is used to measure or set very small gaps, normally under 1 mm. When the blades are folded back into the handle, the thin, delicate blade are protected. The thickest possible blade that can be inserted into a gap or crack shows its width.
Note: normally the blades are not hardened. So when you want to measure a gap, be very careful you do not bend or deform the delicate blades. This will render that blade mostly useless and then you often will have to replace the entire tool, as the plates here are not individually replaceable. One more small tip: sometimes the plates can stick together, so be careful to check that you use only one plate at a time.
