Scrapers, despite the ubiquitous sandpaper, continue to be a useful means of delicately removing shavings, old layers of paint, lacquer or polish, and even ingrained dirt. Admittedly, the scraper is a tool that not everybody masters at the first attempt. It is not expensive and it is hallowed by tradition, but it does require practice and an understanding of how it works. How to sharpen scrapers?
On purchase a scraper is not usually ready for use, but simply a piece of sheet steel, which can only fulfil its task when it has been given a fine burr. If you find a burr on a scraper you buy, it is no more than an accidental byproduct of the metal-cutting process.

These scrapers, made of the off-cuts from manufacturing Japanese saw blades, have the perfect mixture of elasticity and hardness to allow you to form the optimal burr with your burnishing rod. They are made from high carbon steel. They are delivered with a fine bur on one side produced from the cutter during manufacturing. Please note the measurements given for the different scrapers. The photo of these tools is not at all to the same scale as the other products pictured on this page. These are small scrapers.

Burnishers, Scraper Holder, File Holder
For ages, the common burnisher has remained largely unchanged. As a simple rod of hardened steel held in a handle, its use depended largely on the craftsmanship of the user. Unfortunately, not everyone has got the hang of it and many a user has despaired at the sub-optimal results. This was remedied by the collaboration of Blackburn Tools and the Union Manufacturing Company. The Accu-Burr™ has been thought through down to the smallest detail and presents itself to us as perhaps the most versatile burnisher of all:
At the heart of the Accu-Burr™ burnisher is a 3/16" (4.76 mm) diameter carbide rod with three V-shaped grooves in the centre of the rod. These grooves are precision ground to draw a fine, medium or coarse (5°, 10° and 15° respectively) burr simultaneously on both sides of each prepared edge. Because quality and precision are essential to the function of this tool, only a premium grade of carbide made in the USA by Lakeshore Carbide, a leading manufacturer of carbide tools, is considered.
Advantages of the Accu-Burr™ burnisher:
Already fully operational in the basic version (only carbide rod!). The functionality can be further improved by adding one or two handles. Either make the handle(s) yourself or use e.g. the handles 302123 or 302124, which can be drilled to the required diameter.
Design with fixed brass handles with a hexagonal cross-section that prevents the deposited tool from rolling away. The ends each merge into a round cross-section, as does a small area near the carbide rod. Grooves give additional grip here.
If you want to give your premium tool a proper grip, you can't do without the bronze ferrules, which are hard to beat in terms of material and manufacturing quality.

Round Burnisher for getting a burr on scrapers. Comes without handle. Find handles here! You need to bore the hole wider.
A new take on typical single-handled burnishers, this tool’s innovative design permits a two-handed grip, improving control so you can roll precisely the sort of hook you want on your scraper. As comfortable to grip as a spokeshave, it is held between the thumbs and forefingers, keeping your fingertips close to the carbide rod. This gives you much better tactile feedback, which helps you maintain control of both force and angle as you run it along the edge of a scraper (typically clamped in a vise).
The burnisher’s relatively small size helps prevent you from pressing too hard, so you’re less likely to overwork the edge. Although designed for two-handed use, it can also be maneuvered one-handed. It has a 4.8 mm diameter, 25 mm wide rod injection-molded into a plastic body and is compact enough to slip into an apron pocket. Made in Canada.

The VERITAS variable burnisher makes the process of putting a hook on a cabinet scrapers easy and perfectly repeatable. All you have to do is set the hook angle you want and burnish the clamped scraper. A precision-ground tungsten carbide rod in the brass angle setting knob is held at exactly the right angle as you burnisch. CAUTION: Because the scraper edge is extremly sharp, the body is designed to be used on the pull stroke. It is not necessary to appply great pressure on the scraper while burnishing, repeated passes will roll the edge of the scraper much more consistently and with minimal effort. Instructions

Anyone who works with scrapers a lot will know that there is an unpleasant side-effect, burnt fingers from the heat generated by the friction. Help is to hand with this scraper grip, which means you don't touch the scraper itself. It also allows you to decide in advance how much curvature to work with. For rectangular scrapers with 150 mm side (+ - 3 mm). The Crown and Clifton scrapers are too small for this grip, we recommend to use Eberle or Two Cherries scrapers. How ist works!
