Buying the business and taking on a sixty-eight year old business partner, Ada, with a mysterious past and a gorgeous but distracting grandson, Genie sets out to prove her parents wrong.

Ada’s grandson, Cal, wants to protect his gran from ‘pensioner persuader’, Genie, but soon realises that living in a little seaside town and away from the paparazzi in Hollywood can actually give him time to heal. Hiding in a seafront business with its fiery owner and working as kitchen staff, is the only way he can think of to keep his ex-Hollywood glamour-puss, gran from harm. But his meddling might also ruin Ada's second chance at love.

Hiring a private detective and learning about Genie’s parent’s past makes Cal regret his own impulsiveness. The information he has unearthed could destroy their blossoming romance and turn Genie’s world upside down.

Genie soon discovers that friends can become enemies and your closest family can have lied to you for your whole life.

Sea, sand, sunshine and a superb story with such a lot going on!

Genie's family own a restaurant on the seafront; in her grandparents' day it was a thriving business, but with the death of her grandmother and her specialist ice cream flavours they are struggling. Genie has no shortage of ideas on how to bring back the good ol' days, but her parents don't want to listen. Then they spring it on their daughter that they are selling up and moving across country. Genie finds a new business partner and buys them out. Ada has business experience and is a great asset but then her grandson turns up, ostensibly to check out that she isn't being taken for a ride, but in doing so he hires a private detective who uncovers things about Genie's family that even she doesn't know. Just as Cal and Genie are beginning to have something going on between them, it all threatens to blow everything apart. Do they have a future?

This is a gorgeous book! It has everything packed into it; a strong woman, family, friends, business and a touch of romance along with, oooh, plenty of hot love! Lizzie Chantree has created a fabulous cast of characters, each with their own traits and idiosyncrasies and it makes for a delightful read. This isn't 'just' another romantic comedy - there's much more to it than that and the secrets are kept until almost the very end, making it very exciting! A thoroughly entertaining novel, beautifully written and, as expected from an author of this calibre, quite flawless. Highly recommended and worth a full house of sparkling stars.

A stonkingly good escapist read!

A sundae of a story full of romance, mystery, community, friendships, determination, humour & following your dreams. Lizzie Chantree's mouthwatering new book (for its flavours as well as its male characters!) had me gripped from page 1. Genie's coming of age story is as inspirational as it is uplifting and was a unique twist on the seaside cafe novels I have read in the past. This diverse fusion of drama elevates the author to another level of romantic fiction and it's truly refreshing to indulge in a story with so many fascinating and page-turning layers. I loved it!

Take a few scoops of family drama, drizzle it with some hot men, scatter some sprinkles of misunderstandings along with a wafer of romance, and you get Lizzie Chantree's new novel, The Little Ice Cream Shop By The Sea.
Genie has devoted the whole of her life so far, to helping her parents and grandparents keep their family business afloat, a restaurant and ice cream bar on the seafront, in an Essex town.
She's only twenty-two, but everything revolves around the restaurant, especially since her grandmother passed away. Genie works hard to try and retain the soul of a business fast going under.
Changes in circumstances mean her parents decide to sell the business, and move to Cornwall, and her Grandfather plans to travel the world. But Genie can't let her heritage go to waste, like that.
Enter Ada, an older woman with her own griefs. She's a widow, with many memories, and they are the reason she is there, having left the rest of her family in the US.
An unlikely friendship between the two is the catalyst for them going into partnership, and Genie's hopes of keeping her family business, stay alive.
Of course, it would be far too simple if that was the end to the story.
Enter a hunky waiter, a handsome son of Ada's friend, and a gorgeous, tanned Adonis of a grandson (of Ava's) and you have your heartaches and romance too.
Oh, and not forgetting all the family secrets hidden deep below the surface, that work their way up and out into the real world again!
I really enjoyed reading this and devoured it in a day!
I sometimes forgot how old, or young, Genie actually was, what with all she has experienced in her life. The early twenties are the time to chase your own dreams, make your mistakes and find your true path, but it is as if Genie has been treading that path since she was a fourteen-year-old.
I felt quite sad for her that she hadn't had much of a chance to live her own life, but understood her insistence in wanting to keep the legacy of her family alive.
An easy read, with some interesting twists, and a few sizzling scenes, too... just make sure they don't melt your ice cream!

Lizzie Chantree writes lovely romance novels and her latest is no exception. Her strengths lie in creating wonderful characters, beguiling settings and simple but effective story lines.

The main protagonist Genie has a lot of relatable qualities, such as her hardworking ethos, her strong sense of duty, and sadness at her family leaving to pursue a new life and business without her. Genie’s insecurities about her looks and the behaviour of her neglectful friends and family flame her vulnerabilities. Her uncertainties grow, making her fear that the people she loves will leave her, and this anxiety spills over into her private life.

Nevertheless, her confidence begins to grow as the novel unfolds. It’s a nice change to see a curvy girl feeling happy and sexy in her own body. It is also interesting to see Genie develop a friendship with an older woman, Ada – a grandmother like figure. That’s a nice touch, as is the references to older people and grandparents in general in this story.

As for the hot guys well they had me drooling… Bailey, Cal, Toby, all of which brightened my days, which is always good, as did Genie’s wrestling with her growing attraction towards Cal and to Toby.

The revelations about Cal and Ada and the family add interest to the story too.

There are lovely touches of humour throughout.

And being that I am partial to the seaside and ice cream, (well food in general – yes I do love my grub,) this is pretty perfect. You can almost taste the ice cream, the writing is that flavoursome good!

My recommendation: Get a copy!

My rating 5 stars.

My word this book was amazing first one I’ve read by this author and won’t be the last. Jam packed full with great story plots and great characters and plenty about romance and families and secrets and of course the seaside and ice creams what more do you want. Worth far more than five stars and didn’t want it to end.
Genie and her family have a seafront business and it’s not doing well at all done her grandmother died as she made all the ice cream. Genie is desperate to save it but her parents don’t want to they feel it will be better to sell it and move to Cornwall and help run a cafe there near her other grandparent. She decides to go into business with Ada who is grieving herself and her grandson and something is strange as they are hiding something themselves. She wants to show her parents she can make a go of this and her parents are upset she hasn’t moved with them. Cal who is Ada grandson is trying to hide from a movie life style and hides in works as kitchen staff for genie and what will happen when they realise they are falling for each other but cal ruins this when he hired a private detective to investigate Genie and her family and so many secretes come out can they all work out and the family can be united again or is it past that.
A fantastic read.

Family, secrets, rejection, love, and a dodgy seagull – SUBLIME

I have read and loved all of Chantree’s books, and this is not even my favoured genre. Chantree has a way of creating an intriguing and seemingly innocent plot that slowly draws you in and all of your emotions are set afire – The Ice Cream Shop does all of this and more and I never saw where it was going until the end and, like in all of her books, I shed more than one tear.
In this book we see a young woman, Genie, struggling with self-esteem issues; she cannot see how clever, how beautiful she is – she cannot see that she is a real woman. She has worked virtually every day since she was 15 in her family’s seaside café, a business that has been in the family for generations. It is not a huge success and all the ideas Genie has for recovering the essence of the café are rejected by her parents who seem to be absorbed by their own personal issues. The loss of her beloved Nan, the ice cream whizz of the family, leaves her and her granddad bereft. And then, out of the blue, the parents announce they are selling the business and granddad is off on a cruise; Genie is devastated, especially as mum and dad expected Genie to just fall in line and go with them – the café was her whole life. They intend to go to Cornwall to another café business, already bought without consulting Genie, and to be near her maternal grandparents, whom Genie dislikes intensely. She considers them manipulative and toxic.
Genie, for the first time in her life, sticks her heels in:
What follows is how Genie deals with all the issues, realising at that moment also that she has committed so much time to the café in her short life that she has no real friends to call upon for a sympathetic ear, just a few of the customers who nowadays were mainly elderly. It is in conversation with one of the older ladies that she begins to see herself, and slowly she recovers some self-belief.
I cannot say more for fear of spoiling what is a complex and thoroughly engaging family plot. It is a testament to the consummate writing skills of Chantree that these tormented family issues, and intrusions from ‘well-meaning’ outsiders, and a dodgy seagull, make for a truly wonderful and emotional novel and, where it goes, I never saw. I had moments incandescent with anger (families can do this) and more than a few tears. If this was a TV play I would have been shouting at the telly and weeping ‘discreetly’ – I loved it – a tormented family where each family member has a story, even the seagull has a story – SUBLIME – 5 stars.

Very enjoyable tale of secrets, family drama and romance, set against the backdrop of the English seaside. This is a well written novel that kept my attention to the last page. Each character had it's own interesting back story and I liked how the story was told from multiple point of views. The author did a great job creating chemistry between the main character and her love interest and there was plenty of tension and twists that kept the story flowing. A fun, heartwarming read. :-)

I want Ice Cream 😍

this is a great summer read. It's warm and inviting. The story has enough to keep you up late into the night reading. It's a funny read with some heartbreakingly sad bits too.
It's nice to read about a different coast as so many nowadays are set in Cornwall.
I would happily devour a second sitting if there was another one written?

I loved the story in the book, in many ways it has adversity, family dynamic changes, secrets, unexpected new friends, and some romance.

I am not one for writing reviews with all the details of the books as published on the back of harback/or paperbacks as you can see for yourself when looking for it.

But it is a lovely book to read, with quite a few twists and turns and quite honestly probably as close to everyday people's lives. Although I am not saying that all of the storylines happen to everyone, but some people will relate.

Highly recommended.

I have Amazon Prime and I had seen this book on the list but dismissed it because of the title on the cover. Where are the capital letters? Reading the synopsis it sounded like my kind of a book but who has a front cover with no capitals in the title? Anyway my mum read it and said she'd enjoyed so I thought it's free I'll give it a whirl and the other reviews were all good too. Pah. What my mum and all those other people saw in it I'll never know and how happy I was not to have paid actual money for it. I ploughed on until the end but I did skip bits and skim read most of the other bits. I tried to like it and get on with it because mostly I enjoy the same books as my mum but had she not recommended it I would have abandoned it two chapters in. I kept waiting for it to get better!
I still like the premise and I originally liked the fact that it wasn't set in Cornwall like so many of these types of books are but that's about as far as my "good bits about the book" will stretch. The descriptions of the setting were disappointing, the author didn't really have anything to distinguish the town from any other seaside town in the UK. Vague and generic is fine but it diminished my initial excitement of "its not Cornwall" because it really wasn't anywhere at all.
I found the style of writing very basic and clunky with lots of repetition, not just with information but with full phrases. There were also quite a lot of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors which didn't help when I was finding it struggle to read anyway.
The characters were OK, but I wasn't really invested in them.
It was just something about the writing style which just turned me off. It was a bit like reading a fourteen year olds take on chick-lit when they'd also been told there was a minimum word count, so they'd padded it out to reach a specific target rather than edit it to what would be enjoyable to read.
All in all it doesn't make me want to read another Lizzie Chantree and I'll be thinking twice about taking a recommendation from my mum too!

A small seafront business brought to life

Looks like this place needed a strong lady to raise it to a new future but secrets always in background parents suddenly departing but Ada appears hiding from her past and waves her wand stick with the story it takes time to reveal I like evil seagull and grandad inventing things and a hunk of a grandson who has his own issues but as always like a stormy sea calm waters seem to come

My new favourite Lizzie Chantree book! This story reminded me of an episode of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, in all the best ways- a little ice-cream shop by the sea that needs a sharp mind and a lot of love to bring out its potential. And Genie is just the person for the job. But of course, Genie's story is so much more layered than that. Throw in some dark family secrets, along with a few hunky men and an evil pigeon, and you have yourself a very entertaining read.

I had really high hopes for this book which kind of surprised me since I have never read this author before. But this being a dream job of mine I really wanted this book to be great!
It did not disappoint! I really liked the development, the characters and their relationships. The twist at the end is definitely not something I saw coming which was a nice surprise from a chicklit book!. I highly recommend this book and will be checking out more books by this author for sure!

I will never ever not be on board with a book about someone who not only chooses to follow their dreams, but also one that requires both an overhaul of an existing business. I beyond enjoyed this book, with a nice cast of characters, some sizzling romance, and fantastic settings that put me right there. Thoroughly enjoyed!

Such a lovely story

I loved this story about Genie and her family's restaurant, they ignored her ideas of how to improve the restaurant. Genie didn't know that they had problems of their own. Ada approached Genie and asked her for a partnership in the restaurant Genie was going to take over after her parents decided to sell up and move on. Adam's grandson arrives unexpectedly and Genie feels a rug towards him. I would recommend this book to anyone. I am now starting the next book in the series.

Great read

Have really enjoyed reading this book about a family based business and what happens when you keep secrets from them. The main character has to deal with her parents going off and leaving her to run the family business and then discovers a secret that rocks her world but comes good in the end.

A well layered story of families and their secrets and problems and a growing up young woman who learned how to rely on herself and believe in herself. Some male eye candy to spice up the story but not making it tacky. A very entertaining read. I will definitely look for more on this seaside series.
Just a better proof reading next time… a few mistakes…
