Vintage engraving of Francis Bacon 1561 to 1626 was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, and author. He served both as Attorney General and as Lord Chancellor of England. After his death, he remained extremely influential through his works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method during the scientific revolution.

Historical view from the 19th century of the Old Gorhambury House, near St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. Built in 1563–68 by Sir Nicholas Bacon. After the death of his father (1579), his son, Sir Francis Bacon, spent the rest of his life here from 1621. He conducted scientific experiments and wrote his influential philosophy. Today the former manor house only exists as a ruin. Wood engraving, published in 1893.
