BIM Modeling in Detail with Several Levels of Detail (LOD)

Everybody in the AEC sector is familiar with BIM modeling. It is both the industry's current and future. And it has been observed that both large and small businesses in recent years have a great deal of confidence in 3D BIM models.

First of all, BIM (building information modeling) is a sophisticated technology that develops three-dimensional models for a range of engineering, construction, and architectural purposes. Wherever it is applied, it provides projects a visual supremacy. Architects, engineers, contractors, and project owners frequently use the BIM tool.

Building information modeling has several qualities that make it such a well-liked technology that so many users employ. It has undoubtedly altered how this industry previously operated. Every user relies on the three-dimensional aspect since it adds more information than is necessary. These specifications aid in raising the project's level in a number of beneficial ways. There is no turning back once stakeholders receive BIM models for their project. It is necessary because how user-friendly it makes things for them.

LOD is a crucial component of 3D BIM modeling services that has significant value for the project. LOD, which stands for Level of Development, is a term used to describe the complete process, from how a project will begin to run to how it will look when it is finished. LOD is a compiled set of parameters that gives the AEC sector the necessary data, to put it simply. This specificity aids in the process' documentation and efficiency.

As a result, all parties involved can depict the various project components in a sophisticated way at different stages of development. When the BIM experts collaborate with the architects and designers to finalize the LOD, the expected outcomes are always obtained. By providing detailed project, it aids all other project users in understanding the project a little bit better.

How can LOD aid in precise BIM modeling?

The geometric components remain in place because of the amount of detail used in the BIM models. The technique is significantly more effective in terms of quality and pure accuracy. Thanks to the information that is produced as a result. It enables the team to rely on the data to a certain extent. The entire BIM modeling process becomes a systematic route to success when a level of detail is used. In other words, it optimizes and controls the procedure to provide an effective result.

The LOD enables the project's designers to learn about the features in detail and implement them at different project phases. It provides a thorough grasp of the model being developed. Additionally, this results in a far more precise BIM project execution and outcome.

The utilization of degree of details creates a communication pathway for the team's designers, builders, and other participants. By increasing the functionality of BIM, this makes it even more useful. The LOD framework is set up in a way that makes it possible for project stakeholders to communicate effectively.

Various Levels of Details (LOD)

• LOD 100 (Concept Designing)

A construction project's very first phase is this one. The construction project's model is presented in a very simplistic manner with minimal information. The models are depicted graphically or using symbolic language. Typically, the detail specifies the area, heights, orientation, volume, etc. that will make up the model. The data in this model is typically thought of as being on approximate terms.

•LOD 200 (Schematic or Geometric Designing)

The requirements for the materials to be utilized in the project and their amount are included in the second stage of detailing. Here, the model is generalized, and several modeling properties are displayed according to their approximate shape, amounts, locations, sizes, and project-related orientation. During this stage, even non-graphical or non-geometric information is added. Even this step is a rough estimate.

• LOD 300 (Accurate Designing)

At this point, all measurements and associated data are published in a more exact manner. A more detailed explanation of each model attribute is given. When it comes to size, form, amount, location, and orientation, this model generates incredibly accurate details. Based on the need for raw materials and other resources, the specifications are computed. Here, the beginning of the project is defined, and the elements are placed correctly.

• LOD 350  (Documentation details)

The actual construction work begins after the foundation has been built. Right now, the function of clash detection is being performed, and clashes are immediately resolved upon discovery. A relationship is made between each construction component as it is regarded in relation to the systems of other buildings. At this point, there are some non-graphical features present.

• LOD 400 (Fabrication & erection)

This particular phase of the modeling process is crucial. Here, the model is enhanced with minor features for the model's construction-related final execution. At this point, the complete project procedure has been detailed.

• LOD 500 (As-Built model)

The result is produced in the last stage of the procedure, which incorporates the graphical features into the actual finished project. At this point, it is appropriate to illustrate all the modifications and departures from the original plan. This serves as the final model and a guide for all operational construction activities to be carried out in the future. It remains throughout the course of the project.
