Flora and Son Star Eve Hewson Claims She Doesn't Share Her Dad Bono's Singing Talent

The Flora and Son star bailed on an audition for Emma Stone's La La Land because of her vocal fears—but if you need a cliff-jumper, she's your girl.

By Samantha Vincenty

Irish actress Eve Hewson visited Late Night with Seth Meyers on November 14 to chat about her new movie with Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Flora and Son. Hewson plays Flora, a single Dublin mom who asks an American guitar teacher (Gordon-Levitt) to give her lessons so she can make music with her teenage son. While Hewson really does sing in Flora and Son, she told Seth Meyers she's "terrified" to do it.

How to Watch

Watch Late Night with Seth Meyers on NBC weeknights at 12:35/11:35c and next day on Peacock.

"This is not for me," Hewson insisted. "I think in the film, I sound like a tiny baby chipmunk with a dagger in its back, like, 'SING!'" When a critic praised her singing, "I sent it immediately to my singing teacher."

Hewson comes from a musical family: The Bad Sisters star's father is U2 vocalist Bono (Hewson's been vocally grateful and self aware about her self-described "privilege," and famously joked that she was 'devastated' to be overlooked in a 2022 New York magazine article about "nepotism babies.").

Hewson is more proud her commitment to cliff-jumping without a stunt double on the show Bad Sisters, and a certain skill that late actor James Gandolfini praised her for while making Enough Said: Her ability to act while demolishing the prop food.

As Meyers showed screengrabs of the proof, Hewson joked she's constantly eaten on camera as a tribute to what Meyers called "the great eating actor of our time."

Eve Hewson bailed on her callback for Emma Stone's La La Land role

Hewson shared that she was up for the part in Damien Chazelle's La La Land, which went to Emma Stone.

"They said, oh you're meeting with Damien Chazelle, it's kind of an improv-y thing," Hewson told Meyers. "I was like, 'oh, improv, I like that stuff."

Her agent called soon after, saying it went great. Hewson said she was told, "you have to go back in now for your second audition—and it's the singing.' And I was like...no.'"

"And thank god I'm not in it, you know?" Hewson laughed, since Stone won an Oscar for the role. Fortunately, Hewson decided to conquer her fears to make Flora and Son.
