Welcome to Alberobello

Alberobello

The pleasure of staying in a B&B, in the heart of Alberobello

Visiting Alberobello and finding oneself in awe the spectacle of its characteristic trulli, one is struck by the truth of the phrase “necessity is the mother of invention”.

In fact, it was the necessity of avoiding taxes imposed by the King of Naples in the edict “Prammatica De Baronibus” that caused the Counts of Conversano D’Acquaviva D’Aragona to force local farmers to exclusively carry out dry construction, which could be dismantled in a night in case of a royal inspection.

Thus, the trulli were born – unique temporary dwellings, round in shape with a dome, registered by UNESCO on the list of World Heritage Sites, which have given Alberobello its own cultural identity, as well as international renown.

Everything within walking distance

Alberobello is a small town, and can be travelled entirely on foot. You could begin your exploration by heading for the Piazza del Popolo Viewpoint, where you can admire the impressive view of Rione Monti’s 1000 trulli.

Right here, penetrating into Rione Monti, you can see some of the symbols associated with Alberobello: the Trulli Siamesi, the Casa Trullo, and the Trullo Church.

This is without a doubt the most tourist-heavy and popular parts of the town where you can find souvenirs that aren’t always artisan quality – so we recommend paying attention to quality!

Less tourist-heavy and more authentic, on the other hand, is Rione Aia Piccola, characterised by around 400 trulli, fewer souvenir shops, and lashings of village life. For example, the Olive Oil Museum and Local Museum can be found here.

Finally, outside the monumental area, behind the church of Saints Cosma and Damiano is the Trullo Sovrano (“Supreme Trullo” in Italian), so called for its size and the unique techniques used in its construction, which made exceptional use of mortar to bind the stones.

Ideas to enhance your experience

On top of the traditional visit to the town of trulli, why not think up a special alternative itinerary to experience your stay in an even more authentic way?
In fact, we work with specialised local agencies that can help you to discover the most distinctive pockets of the area. Segway and alternative transport Tours of Alberobello, tasting visits to the Cantina Albea winery, and guided tours of the tastes of the countryside are just some of the most popular suggestions.
