Great car OP, I owned a 80 Sport way back, great car, really enjoyed driving it

Roll on 20 odd years and my son is busy saving up to buy his first car

He's determined it will be an Audi 80 Avant or saloon cool

Would be interest to hear your thoughts on how the 2ltr petrol compares to a Tdi

Looking forward to more updates

I bought a 1990 1.8E which was fuel injected with 110hp, back in 1999 which felt brilliant compared to the horrible old Volvo 340 1.7GLE I had before. It felt solid, had a nice interior and was a good motorway cruiser being tall geared - 2,600 revs at 70 mph in 5th. Off the motorways and main roads the handling wasn’t wonderful having a tendency to understeer, but then I didn’t buy it to chuck around back lanes.

I later bought the C4 A6 2.5TDi essentially a rebadged Audi 100. Almost identical to the 80 but a bit bigger with longer boot and bonnet. That also felt solid - brilliant on diesel.

The TDi was great at the time and is a good engine that pulled well but ultimately it was very noisy and ruins the reasonably decent refinement the car has.

Our 1.6 seemed gutless at the time but this 2.0 seems to go reasonably well (and that's after I jumped out of a 280bhp Skoda). It's pretty quiet but does run at 3000rpm at 70mph which is not ideal, but very similar to our Octavia vRS.

I think most older 5 speed cars are like this. My 190E was the same as well I think, even with an Auto gearbox.

That looks like a nice car, Max. You find the good ones. The 80 and B5 A4 were about the last Audi's that I liked.

I completely understand the need for a winter project - I'm still driving mine two years later.

Thanks Mark. They are both great cars and I've wanted a B5 for ages - they just bring extra complexity which would no doubt need more money spent but I probably should have got one as they have ISO-fix mounts!

My B5 Passat 1.8t had its fair share of niggling issues that were common.

Water leak through the pollen filter housing past the deteriorated foam gasket causing a wet floor (why foam?). Replaced it with automotive sealing cord mastic.

Plenum drains clog and cause the chamber to fill with water to enter via the pollen filter. Removed the drain bungs and keep clear of leaves after a close call seeing the plenum half filled with water.

The rear brake callipers had a habit of sticking.

Front control arms are made of chocolate.

The back doors had a habit of sometimes not latching closed, so would bounce back open when closing them.

Front wheel arches will rust at some point.

Door microswitches stopped working on the passenger and rear doors, so even if you opened one of those doors the car would still lock itself.

Otherwise it was a nice car. We bought ours in 2004 with 85,000 and sold it with 285,000 miles in 2019. I managed to keep the interior as perfect as it could be for that mileage. No wear on the seat bolster of gearbox gaiter, whilst other Passats I saw on Autotrader would look like it was a kennel for a Rottweiler.

I have some expired tax discs in the history, so I may grab a holder for one.

Ooh Thanks, I will do. Weirdly I have an RAC one in my Fiesta as well!

The colour (for anyone interested) is Gomera Green. The same colour (according to a Daily Mail article online) as one of Princess Diana's Cabriolets.

Looks like a great project!

I have a real soft spot for this era of Audi's. Brings back good memories of a 2.2 Coupe I had for a while, followed soon after by an S2. The S2 was the one car I wish I'd kept hold of, as they seem to be pretty rare now.

What a great find. I do like this era of Audi.
How well do these resist rust?

Very, they are galvanised. They shouldn't rust unless they have been messed with.

Weirdly our first two had rusty front wings but seemed to have original paint.

This one has a bit around the A-pillar when someone has obviously made a mess of changing the windscreen. I will hopefully have it fixed at some point but it could be expensive and I'm not sure if I can tie in a body shop job with an insurance windscreen - probably not.

I had an identical S2 2.2 Coupe when I was 20. I loved it but then someone offered to swap it for their Evo 4 which I couldn't turn down. I wish I'd kept the Audi.

OP, yours looks lovely. There's a white 80 saloon just up the road from where I live that still appears to be used daily.

Finally, some interior photos as I managed to get it hoovered, trim wiped down and some plastics dressed today:

The driver's mat needs a wet vac and I desperately need a 3-spoke leather steering wheel as this one is awful. I also changed the stereo and gear gaiter since the photos in my original post.

Yesterday I completed what you could probably call a full service. Oil and filter, air filter, pollen filter and 4 spark plugs. The air filter was dated 2003 and to my horror (but not really that surprised) the fuel filter was the original item dated 1994! This car has 16 services recorded in the book and the first 10 are by Audi main dealers.

I've now ordered a new Bosch dizzy cap and rotor arm as on inspection the one on the car is cracked.

Great project and condition for age.

Owned a light blue 2.0l sport on speedline wheels for a while. Drove well and solidly built.
Thought the steering was a little light for my tastes, but otherwise it was old school Audi greatness. Mine liked a drink of oil, but was probably driven very hard by previous owner (s).

Look forward to updates.

For a 28 year old car that's wearing the miles amazingly well. The interior and engine bay look really fresh.

Thanks, I was surprised how well it came up for just a wash. I'm looking to go over it with a machine polisher over Christmas.

I've not touched the engine bay yet, I will get the steam cleaner out soon.

The only recent update is I changed the dizzy cap and rotor arm as I found the cap was cracked when I was doing the other service items.

Over the Christmas break, myself and a good friend gave the car a once over with a machine and a coat of wax, quite a good improvement.

No daylight/outdoor photos yet as it's been raining since..

Great to see this being cared for and looking good. For what is a fairly ordinary car there’s a lot of love for it (including me).
