      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Even though the film is stylish and atmospheric, critics say The Ninth Gate meanders aimlessly and is often ludicrous. And despite the advertising, there's hardly any chills.

Sylvia W Watched it many Times, guess I got a thing for this kind of Storys, AND I think all Polanski Movies are great, can not really decide witch one is my Favorite...this one for sure has what it takes to tell a funny wicked satanic Story. And the Music fits perfect... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Bruno V Credo. Que lixo foi esse? Coloquei muita fé no começo. Mas que filme desgraçadinho. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review Gerwyn M I enjoyed this movie and liked the supernatural element. If you haven't seen it before I'd recommend it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Jo This film is so bad that I have specifically joined Rotten Tomatoes with the sole intention of warning others not to waste their hard earned leisure time watching it. Terrible on every level. Johnny Depp's beautiful face can't save it. The final nail in the coffin is the soundtrack, which is beyond hackneyed and genuinely could have been half lifted from Pink Panther and the Bond franchise in its lack of subtlety. Avoid at all costs. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/23 Full Review Kliff H Magickal and esoteric flick from Polanski, embracing an odd book dealer, who sets his foot into the occult and satanic sphere. Weird things occur to happen throughout the movie, yet to be taken too seriously and the level of seriousity is actually floating through the movie, one just have to jump on board an embrace it. Its both thrilling and chilling, yet also sniffing onto elements which strikes near real lodges. The story is not bullet-proof, but has a great originality and idea. It also goes a long way, in a helpful manner, to be a little interested in the occult, but be able to embrace this masterpiece for what it is. Not to mention, how extremely good the soundtrack also is, bone-chilling and a real atmosphere generator. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review A Shane I A slow moving, gripping neo-noir film that balances the investigative world of book authentication with themes of the occult. The film spends considerable time building questions and suspense regarding the titular medieval text featured, with particularly excellent performances by Johnny Depp, Frank Langella, and Emmanuelle Seigner. Of additional praise in the film is the set design - which balances occult themes, gritty noir tropes, and dark academia settings - and the compelling score of Wojciech Kilar. Fans of the original book the film is based on - The Club Dumas - will have their mileage vary in their enjoyment due to the dramatic differences in plot, and overall the film isn't likely to please all or even a majority of audiences. It leaves many threads either incomplete or with additional questions, which may frustrate viewers that prefer full explanations or fully resolved threads. Book lovers will greatly enjoy the film for its heavy usage of the collection and research of rare books, and it is in my opinion a hereto-slept upon neo-noir which should be recognized and enjoyed in the cinematic canon of Dark Academia.
