Biography

  • Washed Out (born 3 October 1982), - aka Ernest Greene - is a singer/ songwriter and record producer from Georgia, US.

After studying for a degree at The University of Georgia, Greene moved back in with his parents after struggling to find a job, which is where he began producing songs from his bedroom. His music includes a variation of indie pop, synthpop, electronica and trip hop style genres. His style has also been connected with the chillwave movement in the past and Greene said most of his song writing comes from hip hop influences.

His music started to become more noticed as several music bloggers started to write about music from his Myspace. His first two EPs were released in September 2009. He went on to make his first New York City performance at Santos Party House, which happened to also be the second live show he'd ever done.

In 2011 he was signed to Sub Pop and released his debut album called "Within and Without" in July of that year. His album reached 26 on the US Billboard 200, and it also reached 89 on the UK Albums Chart. Washed Out's second album "Paracosm" was released in 2013. The song "New Theory" from that album went on to be used in a scene from the movie "The Spectacular Now".

Live reviews

  • Feel It All Around. This song really encompasses how I feel about the band Washed Out. I can feel it all around when I watch them perform live. The soothing sounds of the music penetrate to touch my soul and wrap around the vital organ in my chest, my heart.

Stage setup is simple. Just the band, just some lighting. No special effects, no pyrotechnics, no gimmicks. Just the realness of the music is displayed. Lead vocalist has a melodic voice, one in which he makes you forget all about the stresses of the outside world. Nice concert. One of the better ones I've been to. I sometimes find that I like just going and listening to music.

Just sitting and absorbing the performance, without having to do anything and without having to over think. Sometimes that is what we need, just a simple escape. Washed Out provides just that. I liked seeing You and I live. To me it reminds me of the eighties. It really took me back in my mind.

The audience enjoyed this number as well. They expressed their ultimate approval. I would highly encourage anyone looking for real music without all the unnecessary extras and exuberance to check out Washed Out. I believe they'd be pleasantly surprised.

  • 10 / 10 time. Washed Out went strait into it and really offered an incredible experience to all fans.

The live performance was solid and the sound really filled the room. They appeared to be very polite fellows too, interacted with the crowd a bit and slapped some hands on their way off stage. Really seemed to enjoy what they were creating and were having lots of fun while they were up there too and I like to see that.

Further I really liked the way they had their stage set up and beyond that this tour included a crazy visual behind them all.

  • Washed Out is one of my favorite artists. That being said, this was a DJ set, and honestly, I wished it was just a regular Washed Out show. The DJ set left something to be desired. The transitions were abrupt and too frequent. I also thought this would be more of a chillwave dance show, but instead it was actually more of a house set. I mean, I danced, but the song kept changing with no transition but silence. I was not impressed. I'd still like to see if a regular Washed Out show is any better, but this show was disappointing for sure.

  • This was Washed Out's first time playing at the Ogden Amphitheater. They produced a fantastic sound on the outdoor stage. Washed Out performed songs from Life of Leisure, Within and Without, and Paracosm. I don't think I heard anything new or unfamiliar, but I've only been listening to them for 6 years... Although many were seated even for amazing opening acts, Fictionist and Robert DeLong, Washed Out had everyone standing and grooving to the beat. I will DEFINITELY see them again if they come back to SLC.

  • Was a decent show. Not quite sure what I was expecting, but they had fun up there. The visuals were super slick, and I appreciated some of the sync to the music.

Vocals were a little rough at times, and definitely much of the music felt like "just press play and dance". But they covered a lot of new and old stuff.

  • Washed Out has been one of my favorite artists for a long time. Despite the poor sound system at the ampitheater, they did not disappoint. At one point the VIP section was overrun by general admission concert-goers, but the controlled chaos added to the fun. Chillwave at its finest.

  • I have seen many bands and have been to many concerts; however, Washed Out blew my mind! So much talent and their visuals were so cool and stimulating. Their such a feel-good band and I felt so happy and relaxed at their show. See them if you can!

  • Fantastic show! Sounded better live than I even expected and had great stage presence. I'll be seeing them again! Ernest is such a tease, rest of the band came out for a last song and he made the crowd cheer for a solid three minutes before he came out! Worth it!

  • Fantastic show! They hadn't played a concert in about two years, but they were still very clean. I was wondering how they're very chill songs would translate live, but they did it exceptionally. Would definitely go see them again if they come back to Utah!

  • Washed Out has topped the list of my favourite concerts. Minneapolis - First Ave - 2013. The music had everyone moving and thinking, collectively and individually. I've never fell so deep into music as during the show. Fantastic experience!
