Biography JANE ADDAMS HELPED IMMIGRANTS Reading Comprehension Lesson 14 Question

Jane Addams devoted her life to helping others and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 for doing so. Yet, all I ever learned about her in Social Studies books was that she improved the lives of immigrants by establishing a settlement house named Hull House in Chicago. Wanting to know more about Jane Addams’s accomplishments motivated me to write this lesson, which is titled JANE ADDAMS AND HER DEVOTION TO HELPING IMMIGRANTS. I ‘m glad I wrote it, because I found her to be a fascinating person who worked hard to make improvements. I think your students will find this short biography (1 ½ pages) interesting and enlightening. In addition to improving students’ knowledge of history, this lesson will help their reading skills. I wrote 14 multiple choice questions designed to improve their vocabularies (biography, creeds, fortunate, immigrants, mansion, nationalities, synonym, wealthy) and enhance their reading comprehension. Comprehension skills include: Determining Main Idea, Finding Details, Identifying Character Traits, Recognizing Cause-Effect Relationships, and Differentiating Literary Genre. Two public domain photographs are included. One of Jane Addams and another of Hull House. The final fifth page is the answer key.
