Chianti Colli Fiorentini

A Guide to the Chianti Colli Fiorentini Region

On the hills immediately above city of Florence stands the terroir of the Colli Fiorentini DOCG, one of the seven subzones of the Chianti designation. The area has been recorded in art and literature as a prime viticultural region, and its best vino cittadino has filled numerous carafes on the patios of local Fiorentine restaurants since the Renaissance. It’s an ambiance that pays tribute to the warm Mediterranean atmosphere that reigns over Firenze’s low, rolling hills.

Wrapped around the northern end of the Chianti Classico designation, this region’s wine doesn’t have Classico’s complexity with aging. The wine has the classic Chianti red fruit and violet aromatics, but it also adds spiciness that works well with the its lively persistent perfume. It’s generally a very well balanced wine, with a tannic structure that’s calibrated by the high natural acidity of its Sangiovese grapes. The wine ages very well and is ideally suited for most meals.
