Even in the exclusive world of Ferrari, the Testa D’Oro Colani is one of a kind

The Ferrari catalog is chock-full of classic beauties fit for bedroom posters, but the various one-offs and custom creations that emerge from the automaker often also have a flair for the abstract.

Yes, strange oeuvres like the Pininfarina Sergio or the Ferrari spaceship pop up every once in awhile, but this time around we’re focusing on something altogether unique — the Ferrari Testa D’Oro Colani. Simply put, the Italian tongue-twister looks like nothing else out there. This fabled creation from the late 1980s is currently on display in Italy.

Drafted by German industrial designer Luigi Colani, the car displays the same kind of retro-futurism we loved on his 1981 BMW M2 Concept, which showcases the artist’s quirky style. As for the Italian mouthful, the cherry red two-seater is stretched long and low, with a giant front lip and black headlight housings giving the car a distinct expressive face. From some angles, it looks like a bizarre space capsule from the future. From others, it looks downright reptilian.

The aesthetics are more than just eye-catching though; they’re functional. The Testa D’Oro Colani was created in 1989 to chase top speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats, hence the sloping roofline and deliberately-placed vents. Underneath that smooth bodywork lies the foundation of a Ferrari Testarossa, but with a few choice additions.

To chase the records books, Colani hooked up with German sports car manufacturer Lotec and added two turbochargers to the Testarossa’s flat-12 engine. After various modifications and some tuning, the vehicle produced a whopping 739 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Those are impressive numbers for 2015, much less 1989.

Despite those figures, the “Head of Gold” failed to set a new top speed record at Bonneville, reaching a speed of 211 mph before coming back and hitting 218 mph a few years later. Even without that achievement (it did win the award for the fastest car with a catalytic converter), the car remains legendary in its own way. If you’re in Italy, you can see the car in person at the Maranello Purosangue showroom.

Rivian R2 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5: Should you wait for the Rivian R2?

Rivian has taken the wraps off of the Rivian R2, an electric SUV that's similar to the much-loved R1S, but smaller and, crucially, cheaper. But the R2 goes up against some serious competition. The likes of Hyundai have been building solid EVs for some time now -- including the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

The R2 and the Ioniq 5 each make a compelling case for themselves, and they're likely to end up being similarly priced if the Ioniq 5 doesn't get much cheaper and the R2 does end up being sold at $45,000. To be fair, the cars are pretty different -- the R2 is more of an SUV, while the Ioniq 5 is much more crossover-sized. But because of their similar price, you might be deciding between the two. How do they compare? We put the Rivian R2 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 head-to-head.

The differences between the Rivian R2 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are perhaps no more apparent than when it comes to design.

The 6 best remote car starters in 2024

While some modern vehicles come standard with remote start features, it's still relatively uncommon. That's a shame because if you live somewhere where cold weather, snow, and ice are frequent concerns, a remote car starter is one of the best auto accessories you can have. If you're not familiar with them, a remote car starter works similarly to a key fob, except it will actually start your car from a distance instead of just unlocking the doors or trunk. That means you can start your car from the warm comfort of your home or office before venturing out. If you live somewhere hot, you can even start your car and let the AC run for a little bit. You'll never enter a freezing cold or scorching hot vehicle again.

The best remote car starters have long ranges, replaceable batteries, and other handy features — but how do you know which is best for you? We’ve compiled a list of the best car starters in a range of prices and features. Keep in mind that while you can install some yourself, some will require a professional.
