A yob plunged football into more shame by making a sick monkey gesture at black Premier League star Romelu Lukaku.
Police are investigating the Sunderland supporter over allegations of racist abuse directed at West Brom striker Lukaku, 19.
The vile gesture was made on Saturday just three weeks after a mindless Chelsea fan was arrested for a similar offence.
Football fans have united in their disgust at the Sunderland supporter’s abuse of Lukaku as he celebrated scoring a goal in his side’s win.
Ex-Sunderland captain Gary Bennett, who is patron of the Show Racism the Red Card campaign, said: “I’ve seen the photo of this individual making an obvious racist gesture and it is shocking.”
Northumbria police received a complaint about the gesture at Sunderland’s ground, the Stadium of Light, within hours of the final whistle.
West Brom boss Steve Clarke said the club is rallying around Belgian star Lukaku, who is on loan from Chelsea.
Clarke also hit out at the anti-Semitic abuse dished out by vile West Ham fans during their Premier League game at Spurs on Sunday.
He said: “There should be no place in the game, or in any walk of life, for some of the things that have transpired within stadiums over the weekend.
“The authorities are looking into the incident at Sunderland and Romelu has our full support.”
The Mirror today asked Lukaku about the abuse and he replied: “I’m sorry, I don’t want to talk about it.”
Sunderland AFC said it has a zero-tolerance approach to racism and antisocial behaviour, and staff are helping the police probe into the gesture.
Two West Ham fans accepted a police caution for making Nazi salutes at Sunday’s game.
It follows Chelsea fan Gavin Kirkham, 28, being held on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after gesturing at Man Utd striker Danny Welbeck on October 31.
