Maize is an adventure game about sentient corn — no, really

This'll wake you up from a vegetative state

It's nice to see video games get weird every once in a while, and Maize is the latest example of that. Billed as a game about "sentient corn," this first-person title takes you to the American heartland for a strange adventure.

Maize is being developed by Toronto-based Finish Line Games, the indie studio behind Cel Damage HD. Its debut trailer, which you can watch above, introduces one of its oddball characters: a cantankerous cornstalk who doesn't have time for a crow's nonsense (or anyone's, apparently). Players will also encounter a Russian robot bear that takes after Teddy Ruxpin, except with a more ill-tempered personality.

The farm where Maize takes place is abandoned, but the place hides an underground research facility that is very much active — in fact, the corn comes alive because of a mistake by a couple of U.S. government scientists. Maize's story is inspired by Monty Python and "the funnier episodes of The X-Files," according to Finish Line, and its mechanics include environmental puzzles.

Maize is set for release this fall on PC. For more, check out the 12 screenshots below.
