The "economist" was an associate of Charles Widmore who employed Elsa to get information about Ben from Sayid. He was on a list of people for Sayid to kill for Ben, because they "posed a threat" to the Oceanic Six. Elsa claimed that he "worked in emerging markets," but according to Sayid, he was not truly an economist.
