Through Stefan's diary, we learn that in 1912, Stefan was attending the funeral of Zachariah Salvatore, a “distant cousin.” Damon, whom he had not seen for over 50 years, comes to the funeral and the two learn that members of the founding families of Mystic Falls are being murdered by a serial killer.
