Be it known that 1, JAMES HENRY SWIFT, of Punta' Gorda, in the county of De Soto and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Lid for Cooking Utensils, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriphandle or may be lifted entirely from the body of the receptacle.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide means whereby the lid may not only be removed from the body of the vessel, but also to provide means whereby the pivot of the lid may be placed at either side of the body of said vessel, enabling the lid to be swung to the right or to the left, as maybe found most convenient.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth,and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure 1 isa vertical section through avessel and the improved lid applied thereto, the section being taken practically on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the vessel shown in Fig. 1 and the lid therefor, a part of the lid being broken away at the margin.

A represents a vessel of any desired character, which vessel, at opposite sides of its margin, is provided with apertured cars 10.

' In connection with the vessel A a cover B is cover B, and in order that the solder or other material employed for attaching the pin to the cover shall not be subjected to undue strain when the lid is manipulated a staple 13 is preferably secured either to the handle or to the pin, as shown in both figures, the terminals of the staple being passed through apertures la in the lid at a point between the margin and center, and the terminals of the said staple are then bent downward to an engagement with the under face of the lid and soldered thereto, if desired. The body of the vessel A may be provided with a handle 15, as shown in Fig. 2, if it be deemed desirable or necessary.

In operation the pivot-pin 11 may be passed through the aperture in either ear of the vessel,-

to the right or to the left of a person, as may be desired, so that the cover may be opened horizontally in any direction where there is most room for its manipulation. When it is necessary, the cover may be expeditiously and entirely removed from the body of the vessel, and the cover is manipulated either to raise or to lower it or to swing it to one side by means of the handle 12.

Having thus described my, invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a cover for cooking utensils and the like, of a pin passed through the cover near its periphery and projecting from the inner face thereof to form a pivot, and a staple secured to the outer end of the pin and having the ends of its mem bers passed through openings in the cover and secured therein on the inner face of the cover, substantially as described.

2. In a culinary or other vessel a cover, a pivot-pin passed through the cover near its margin, a handle secured to the upper portion of the pin, and a strengthening device secured to the outer end of the said pin and to the outer surface of the cover at a point near the said pin, as set forth.

3. The combination with a cover for cooking utensils and the like, of a pin passed through the cover near its periphery and projecting from its inner and outer faces, a staple secured to the pin and having its. termi' nals passed through the cover and bent down into engagement with the inner face of the same, and a handle on the outwardly-projeoting end of the pin, substantially as described.
